That was my thought, but I’m still learning. I have been researching turbo build threads that I can find for the 5vzfe, and found that piece on this build. Seemed to have good results with the build.

That's a great build and it shows the capability of the FIC, there is certainly some merit there. I wonder what he's done internally to compensate for the MAF reading. The FIC maps are hard for me to interpret since they're dependent on what the stock ECU is doing.

I had an issue with the trigger signal while tuning. I have since replaced the crank sensor which was the problem but now I am waiting for injectors to come in before tuning again. It does idle and free rev nice but I don’t want to drive it until I have a proper tune. I just finished welding my exhaust system in and I really want to go for a run!
    Cool thread. My build:

I used a generic IAT sensor I bought online for less than $15 with a pigtail included. Drilled a hole in my charge pipe just before the throttle body and used a grommet to hold the sensor in place. So far so good. Obviously, I could have issues with any number of things down the road, but as far as doing little things on the cheap and spending where it counts has been my focus. I don’t have a lot of money to throw at this project and some of the aftermarket parts are just a ripoff. Look at catch cans for example. I made one using a ball mason jar, really hill billy but its a conversation starter at least

It's a less dense filter media that supplements the lack of density with an oil coating to help it still filter some particulate. The issue is the oil finds its way onto MAF sensors often times. Obviously there are dangers of running with a less effective filter too but if you're mostly on pavement in a non dusty climate that's likely negligible. They're mostly a marketing hype product, the flow improvement isn't worth the filtering decrease but some like em. John is right though, there is a filter thread somewhere on here and it's a better place for that discussion.

Also what the heck do I remember your avatar from?

That looks excellent! Giving me all sorts of motivation to get my turbo kit installed now rather than wait haha. Your generic IAT looks a lot like the push-in version of the GM one, if you drill the hole in the piping small enough I've seen them hold at least 15psi without boost leaks. How has the WB1 been reporting since you got it running without trigger, pretty steady? Can always use it to get the fuel side of your map in a good place with the long term trimming function.

You piqued my interest a bit on the MegaSquirt side of things, looks like DIYAUTOTUNE has a startup map posted free on their website for MegaSquirt for a 95-97 5VZ, which I'm sure you could modify for a later model.

It does have a GM style connector, so you are probably correct. I did make the hole as small as possible to avoid blow out, the sensor fits tightly. I wont be pushing boost higher than 12 or so anyway. I haven’t really ran the engine with the data up since I put the new crank sensor in, but my gauge is reading 14.5-14.7. If you need any help locating parts or want to know more about my build, let me know

I have a much smaller grille space since I have a 96, but how well does your intercooler fit. I am going to go with a water to air setups just for space saving

The intercooler fits like it is supposed to be there, I was amazed. Remember my truck is a T100 though, not a Tacoma. I can take a photo and post later today.

If your looking for 3.4 turbo info you can go join Facebook,
There are two groups, 3.4 turbo and 3.4 supercharger groups there.

lots of good info there and other turbo builds with the 3.4
One member has a 1996 turbo build with haltech tune,
He did blow a head gasket and then installed ARP head studs,
So depending on how much boost you run on a turbo might be something to consider.
The earlier 3.4 motors had head gasket issues in particular and there was a recall from Toyota to have them replaced.

I'm sure plenty never got done

My truck was part of that recall. I was actually a tech at Toyota when that recall was active, and since I was young then, I was one of the guys who wanted to do all of those recalls. I never did mine because out of all the recalls I did, none were actually leaking. My gaskets went at about 140k. I have seen the head studs, I would have put them in when I replaced the head gaskets if I had the plans for a turbo then. That was about 7 years ago

I've had the ARP head studs laying in the shop for when the HGs on mine eventually go. It's a pretty easy weekend job as you know. I have the Toyota MLS gaskets as well. Worst part of the whole thing is dealing with that valley coolant pipe if it is leaking.
