Half of the TN TW crew is using these now.

    BaoFeng BF-F8HP (UV-5R 3rd Gen) 8-Watt Dual Band Two-Way Radio (136-174MHz VHF & 400-520MHz UHF) Includes Full Kit with Large Battery https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MAULSOK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_QxUdDbXNKC29W

You can get bigger batteries and shoulder mics and longer antennas and other doodads for it. We just use it for trail comms since there's more channels (so we don't have to keep switching if there is traffic) and the reception and stuff is clearer. Not for talking to people across the globe haha.

This is what we use when we walk, bigger battery is pretty much required for us.

They’re tough as well though, we use them from -15°F to 90°F, in the snow and dusty, dropping them off ledges.

Here is the bracket I have in mine. I took my 8800 out and am trying a 71a in a different spot right now.

Does anyone have pictures of the inside of the roof with the headliner down on a 1st gen double cab? I'm trying to plan my NMO locations and I want to be sure I'm avoiding any support beams that might be up there.

Still looking for First gen double cab headliner-down pictures to plan NMO layout. Or even some notes on where the beams are in the rear roof area?

And does anyone have pictures of your NMO placement on a DC?

It serves its purpose, a little expensive, but I like it.

That's about how I feel. Pricy but works well. Fun project too.

Oh it was fun alright. But in the end it gave me a good reason to do a windshield mounted mirror with compass and thermometer.

That's a good idea to upgrade the mirror. My windsheild mounted mirror was $13 from pep boys. It has a bit of distortion.

I'm building a flatbed camper on my truck and won't be able to see out the back anymore. I might replace my crappy mirror with something like this -

HAM certainly has its uses, but it seems like a lot of the cool kids on instagram that line their dashboards with screens and gizmos do it, I guess, because they can; the more cool gear you have, the more clicks you get.

You could be like that TrailRecon Jeep guy and have 16 different radio systems and screens cluttering up your dashboard, plus carry a couple different handhelds, or just carry an appropriate handheld for the group you're with, and spend the rest of the money on beer.

FWIW, the $70 GMRS license is good for 10 years, and there's no test.

yeah, Ive seen some crazy set ups.
One thing I like about the overhead console is it’s less stuff on the radio/dash area (I can’t think of what that’s called) of the truck. I like it nice and clean...not too much clutter.
I have my back up camera monitor, cell phone holder, switches and that’s it.

    My current setup.
Dual band HAM radio, tablet for navigation, phone for communication, UltraGauge for engine management and GENTEX mirror with compass and thermometer.
Tablet and phone can connect via bluetooth to HAM radio with APRSDROID software for real time tracking with GPS.
Cluttered, maybe, but I have used most of it in remote areas that other communications systems drop out.
