hey guys & gals.... searching for some info that havent found yet.

my 03 Taco has had the frame patched a zillion times. it looks like someone put cheese singles of steel all over it.

yes even some of them are mine. :)

dont think my rear axle is in the right place. think the spring hangers were put back incorrectly.

so is there a definitive way to measure where they should be?
from a known point to X?

is this a known number from point to point?

drop a knowledge bomb on me.

    thanks!

    sk

well backing up to this. was looking for things to do in the garage & figured i measure this up & see whats going on.

passenger side is dead inline where it belongs!

drivers side was actually too far forward by 1" ! yikes! so looks like i need to get that cut loose & moved. trying to decide if wanna do new rear leafs at the same time or if its worth it.

    any input?

Makes sense to do them while you're back there and have them disconnected anyway. If they're old and saggy and you need new ones, now's the time. Just need to figure out if you want stock replacements or heavier duty, lift springs etc.

If your frame has been patched that many times, new leaf springs probably aren't worth it.

yep its been repaired a zillion times at this point. but its super stiff & way stronger than factory at this point.

but it does have 236K miles on those springs/shocks.

figure for sure if i go to drop those bolts out of the leafs.... gonna have to break/cut them to get them out & go with new bolts anyway.

so is it worth it or not is the real question. truck i an everyday driver for me & the dogs.

other than the frame patches its in great shape for its age.

so we have 1 for, 1 against & 1 doesnt know.

    need more input!

If you're patching your frame, the frame is on borrowed time. It's not a matter of stiff as stock, it's more that it's rotting from the inside out, and will continue to do so.

If you can justify putting new General Springs (non-lifted, closest to OEM you'll find) on there go for it.

If I were in your shoes, the only way I would consider new springs is if I was cutting off the whole back of the frame and welding a custom fab'd section into good metal far forward of the spring hangers.

man if i could find a good frame? id do it in a heartbeat.

about the only thing still original is the mounts. from the front cab mount all the way back to the rear leaf hangers has been angle iron plated. whoever did the first dozens of patches did overlaps. the last few were done by me farther rearward & i mitered & butt welded those.
not concerned on the frame at all. (unless the front section starts to rust out)

overall its kinda strange that when they did this they got one side right & the other wrong.
the drawings you guys provided make this a hard to miss locator tool....

the leaf springs company is only about 2 miles away. used them for several other vehicles, they make them exact factory spec or whatever you want.
we'll see how bored i get this winter & go from there.
