I like the interior and exterior looks of the second gen but I like the smaller size of the first gen. It's a bit better for off-roading and with significantly less vehicle, I'm sure the 4 bangers would benefit from being a smaller first gen.

Hi all. First time taco owner but I've been an admirer for a long time. 1st gens have the classic-rugged-tough-looking but not too overbearing fender flares (01 to 04). I mean what's up with the squared off fender flares on the 2nd gens?

2nd gen looks like a "kit" truck with its gimmicky bulgy design elements...

1st gen is a no-nonsense design more true to the original toyota pickup which is why it is so coveted.

I was looking for a small truck. The newer one looks too big and has those ugly fenders that look like they were bolted on the sides as an afterthought. I guess you know how I voted. So glad I found a 1st gen with low miles. Can't believe so many like the newer ones? They don't sell as well.

I've owned three 1st generation and one 2nd generation and they have all been good trucks. They keep getting better though, which is why I now have my '06.

Although the larger turning radius took some getting used to it's been doing so in increments for years now. Gone are the days when could actually make a U-turn in my parent's garage with my little stock 1980 Toyota truck.

I simply loved my '87 FWD Turbo and it gave me good service for nearly twenty years. The '03 I replaced it with I never did get all that attached to -- although everything was fixed under warranty without complaint I had it at the shop more than the previous two trucks combined.

I've had my '06 now for four years without a single problem. The 6-cylinder has more power than I need but actually gets better mileage than the '03 4-cylinder. Off road it's just a much better truck overall and easily handles terrain that I found difficult in either of my previous four-wheelers.

As far as "They don't sell as well" goes the sales data refute this. 2005s through 2007s sold better than any previous year and the reason that 2008s didn't sell as well was due to high gas prices and a bad economy, not the truck per se.

    I have had them all.

My 87' biggest issue was the crappy bed that basically disintegrated.

My 2000, in as much as a frame matters, was a disappointment after 8 years due to the 'transparency' (AKA HOLES) in the frame.

My 2009 so far has been great outside of a windshield noise fixed with a minor trim piece repair and an initial buzz behind the glove box that appeared to have fixed itself after a short period of time.

The added features in the 2009 are nice.

As someone who makes a living reading about the economy and finance, I would say numbers that you post don't always reflect what people are thinking. Good post though, and I would agree that the numbers are surprising to me and show that the new model holds its own. '08 wasn't a good year, ouch. I suspect '09 will be the worst yet, but that will be all about money and mentality.

Americans love bigger and bigger and they love aggressive looking vehicles that look as though they would run others off the road including little kids and their mothers... well the mothers drive the most aggressive SUV's around. I wish it wasn't so, but the size wars will continue forever. The 20 and 30 year olds are going to be the most aggressive generation in my lifetime. I am old for this forum and probably will move on, but I did get some good information here regarding my truck and that was more than worth my time here and I thank you all for that.

    Take care all.

I'm surprised at how many people say that the 2nd gens are too big. I'm used to driving a 4 door F-150, and I really wanted an F-250 diesel. So to me these trucks are TINY. Anyway, I voted for 2nd gens...

I've really tried to feel the love for the 2nd gen but I just can't get there. They may as well be a Tundra.
