2nd gen took the old Tundra body style. I fell in love with tacoma as a small/mid-sized truck so i say 1st gen haha

    1st gen!

I like the narrow track, 3.4 ltr, metal bed and lower price! I am on my 2nd 1st gen.

I have had both, I loved my first gen but feel that every short comming that it had, my second gen does better. It is roomier, can tow more, more power, more comfy seats I could go on & on.

I like the style & room that a 2nd gen. has, but personally I prefer my 2000 ex. cab .Steel bed for one thing, smaller, lighter coupled with 3.4 4x locking diff. TRD Climbs like a goat & is pretty quick on the street when need be & could probably get into a little tighter places than 2nd gen.....

1st gen all the way! Styling, power, steel bed, and a lot stronger frames!! 2nd gens have a lot of goodies and more technology but the weak frames just make all that extra stuff a moot point. I know I'm probably gonna regret saying this,(and this is all in good fun) but, 1st geners got the TRUCK, 2nd geners got the plastic TOY. :D

Neither. I own an '09 AC 4X4 Tacoma, and I'm very happy with it, but I'd trade it straight across for my old 1984 Toyota 4X4 Truck. In a heartbeat.

Solid axles, leaf springs front & rear, manual hubs, stock skidplates & tow hooks, 4WD shift lever, torquey little 22R 4-banger, no options. Absolutely bulletproof. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.

U gotta point there. The late 80s toyota p/ups are strong and ungodly popular out here in HI. They're still selling for like 6K out here. They're a lot easier to work on urself and the straight axle is very sought after. Yall should check out the HI craigslist under cars and trucks. Type in Toyota 4X4 and just look at what they go for out here. I got my '00 for $8,600 and that is a freakin STEAL out here! Oh, and for all u guys that have never been to HI, it is Taco heaven out here. I'd be willing to bet that every 3rd of 4th vehicle u see is a Taco.

Here's what my plastic bed does. IMO the plastic bed suites my needs better than a metal one; it can handle two motorcycles in the bed, it doesn't sqeak when the frame twists, and it's lighter. My 09 is a blast to drive especially w/ 6 gears. I love the 1st gen for it's size but the 2nd gen is still nimble off road if you stick w/ an access cab or single cab.

    The looks are 50/50.
2nd gen V6 is stronger and incorporates more technology that hasn't failed me yet, on and off road. LSD, traction control, elocker, power outlet, back up camera, temp indicator with compass, additonal safety features including 4 airbags (which can be turned off..)
    What more do u want??

Never had a 1st gen but had a 98 4Runner which was almost the same thing. I really like the interior of the 4Runner but it was just a little bit to small (narrow) I really like the size of the interior of the 2nd gens. Overall I would have to say 2nd gen.

Actually, the holes in the frame of my 8 year old 2000 xtra cab made the allegedly a 'stronger' frame pretty much a mute point. Not much good to me when it wouldn't even pass inspection to allow me to drive it another year.

The only salvation was that Toyota thought it was worth over $15,000 to have me not get killed driving the thing as it fell apart on the highway...

I liked my 2000 other than the relatively large holes in the frame, but pretty much the same number of quirks existed in the 87', the 2000' and now the 2009.

It's a sad situation, but my favorite Tacomas are the 95-00 models. Yes, all the buyback years. It's tragic because those will become the rarest years.

Size and the simplicity of my 95.5 suits me. Not much in the way of frills it does have cup holders and a digital clock in dash (not working)

The 2nd gen looks have grown on me, at first I thought they were butt ugly.

The US is probably the largest market for Tacomas and with the population getting fatter all the time it makes sense to switch to a larger style. Sad.
