    need help
    can I towe w a 2004 Toyota Tacoma auto trans 2wd
I have a receiver hitch but can I towe regularly like cars and trucks that weigh more than my truck w upgrades ?
I’m thinking manual trans ,different rear end i don’t know which gear ratios would be good for towing if none knows let me know and also thinking of swapping a 4bd2t Isuzu diesel into it or getting turbo also gonna put trailer brakes adapter in it
But really want to know if I could make a light truck into a car hauler like want a 5,000 lb trailer dry weight with max of 7,000 pounds on it the receiver hitch says it’s good for 5,000 lbs but want to know what y’all think

Welcome to the forum! While several people have towed vehicles/heavy equipment with their Tacoma’s, I wouldn’t advise it. These trucks are simply not designed to have a high payload for extended periods of driving. It would be much more cost effective to purchase a full size for regular towing. The Tacoma can handle small trips without any major repercussions as long as you take it easy. If you plan on long, highway road trips, save yourself the headache and purchase a full size.

In a emergency for a few feet or a mile or two !!

I bought a Ford F250 to handle the heavy towing

Comes down more to stopping and handling then pulling

^Seconded. I towed my dads small utility trailer with no trailer brakes several times and even that was SKETCH trying to stop.

Don't ruin the taco making tons of changes, buy an old secondhand rig that's designed for towing. They are plentiful and cheap on the used market, especially gas engined ones

You can pick up a cheap gas F250 or Silverado 2500 and be able to tow quite a bit.

The tow rating of a vehicle doesn't change no matter what mods you do to it. You could throw a Peterbuilt motor and some tons on it and the tow rating will still be 5000 pounds. As others said, it's not about power, it's stopping and handling.

Just get a bigger truck. You can get a 2010ish Dodge 2500 for under 15k. Those badboys pull almost 18,000 pounds.

    But peterbilts *have* engines, yes?

Big rigs seems to be like RVs. There's a bunch of different names, but they're all made in the same factory, lol.

    No. Absolutely not.

The towing limit on the I4 is 3,500 pounds, and the v6 is 5,500 pounds. No more.

Buy a domestic if you need a tow rig. This is the wrong vehicle to be towing things with.
