Specifically, which bushing did you replace? And are they properly torqued with washers ?

Be sure there are washers in front and rear in first photo

And I’m assuming you replaced the bushing in the second photo since that one is easy.

Since there is 1/4” clearance you should see movement down below if you have a friend move the steering wheel. Tighten those bushing screws up and see if your clearance is reduced

As they wear you're able to tighten them down in order to maintain a good steering response.. Eventually they need to be replaced.
Should verify those bushings are secured down nicely

I know I'm late to the party. But I'm have the same issues with my 99 tacoma. Replaced UBJ and LBJ, R&P with bushings. I also see people recommend the tack weld mod but I don't see how that would fix anything but steering wheel play.

What’s your caster at? I used to have a bit of play, once I got more caster from alignment it’s definitely faded

Not sure off the top of my head, had an alignment done a few months back and didn't fix the issue.

IIRC I replaced the rag joint connecting the steering column to the rack & pinion, this fixed about 90%. The rest was fixed with the energy suspension bushing kit.

    Any word yet?
I'm guessing its the control arm bushings.
I did the energy suspension poly upper and lowers about 4 years ago and I think they're already toast.
Truck is back to its old ways feeling sketchy as hell on the highway.

OME 881 springs with 3/8 spacer. SCS SR8 16x8 Gunmetal 285/75/16 Yokohama G003 Nitros all 4 corners. Dakar rear leafs. Deckplate mod. Marlin Crawler 1200lb clutch. Redline hood struts. ECGS clam shell bearing. Philips LED headlights. Front Runner bed bars. Katskinz leather interior.
New steering gear with outter tie rods helped a lot for loose steering, it's still a 21 year old truck.. but it's what I prefer over a huge payment and a 4cyl/hybrid at this point. I'll keep on addressing issues as they arise.
