4runner Front End Swap Lifted Manual Swapped
Hello all, About 3 months ago now i did an engine and trans swap in 1st gen tacoma. My engine had 518,000kms on it as well as the original automatic transmission. There was nothing wrong with my engine or trans but i had recently purchased a 1999 4runner that also had a 5vzfe and a manual transmission that had 190,000kms on them and i had a 3 days off so i decided it was time to swap my engine and trans with the 4runners. The swap went great apart from the heaps of grease i got on myself from the 19 years of undercoat on my truck.

Few notable things when doing this:
*(when i say not swappable that only means plug n play, anything can be swappable if you love wiring)

The wire harness and ecus are not swappable and you will be left with transission codes constantly triggering the CEL.

The Crossover pipes have differently directed flanges so i had to cut both sets of flanges off and reweld them the correct direction (personally I would rather do a little welding than swapping the manifolds and fighting with the nuts that have been corroded to a round on the manifold studs. I am not sure if the manifolds are swappable, i couldnt imagine they wouldnt be but this was the route i chose.

In the rush of it all I somehow neglected to factor in how i would get a speed pickup so i have been driving without a speedometer and just using an app on my phone to tell me the speed which gets quite annoying after a while. Another thing that you will run in to is that the driveshaft will be 1.25" too short so you will need to have a spacer made for a driveshaft. This wasnt a problem for me since i have a good machine shop in town that made me the spacer in like three hours i just dropped of my drive shaft for them and gave them the measurements off of the output flange on the trans.

4wd system. There is wiring that must be done to make the 4wd useable. the front driveshaft will spin when you engage your 4wd but the lockers will not extend and retract until you have the wiring sorted out. I have been extremely busy with my volvo project so i havent gotten to the wiring yet but there are some great forum posts out there detailing how the connector swap is done. Maybe i will update when i am finished the volvo and give it my day.

If anyone knows the differences of the speed pickup between a 2004 automatic tacoma and a 1999 manual 4runner please drop that wisdom below :) Both are 5vzfes

    Cheers fellas

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
All part of doing any swap. That is not 100% the same!!

Did you really think it would be all plug and play?

I would just buy the speed sensor for the 99 4Runner.

i would hope you have the EWD`s for all vehicles involved .

    I put a 98 4Runner 3.4/ 5 speed in a 2000 Tacoma it was not that difficult for me.

    Good Luck.
