1st gen Tacoma Questions

Hello,
I just have a few questions.

-How can you tell if the 1st gens have a Locking Differential, Limited Slip Differential or an Open Differential?

There's this 1999 toyota tacoma SR5 pre runner, 3.4 liter - 6 cylinder, power windows and locks, cruise control, 6 lug on craigslist.


I might have more questions if I decide to go with it or wait.

Look for the button on the dashboard or look for the actuator on the diff, assuming you can get more pictures or ask the seller as i see no sticker? Even if there was a sticker I'd still double check.

 

Normally they'd have a TRD off-road sticker right?

Wow would not pay that much for that vehicle, I would wait. About your first question if it has a rear locking differential there should be a button for it on the left side of the steering wheel on the dash along with the other accessories, being a pre runner it should be equipped with one IIRC

Another Quick question

-What's included in the TRD Off Road package on the 1st gen Tacomas?

 

Locking diff, metal skid plate under gas tank, Bilstien shocks and decals. I can't remember if 16" alloy wheels was part or not. These are the differenes that I know of because I have a regular 4 x 4 and a TRD 4 x 4. Both are 1st gens.

 

easiest way is to get under and look at the diff.

If there is an actuator on the front driver side, its a locker.

If the drain plug is on the driver side, its a locker

if the drain plug is on the passenger side its a non locker.

Is it pretty easy to swap a locking diff into one with an open diff?

 

My truck has a locker and i'm pretty sure when i drained the diff fluid it came out the passenger side.

An elocker? sure. Just swap in an axle and some wiring.

ARB..takes a bit more as yhou have to take apart the diff..not a first project type thing.

My 96 has a metal gas tank skid

 

yea most do, mine does as well. No TRD package till 97/98. late 97 was the introduction to it
