1st Gen Tacoma's built in Long Beach CA

Just bought my 1998 Tacoma and was interested when they started building Tacoma's in the US. Decided I would check my VIN sticker and mine was built 05/98 and MFD by TABC Inc. located in Long Beach. So I checked my 1997 4runner and the sticker said built 01/97 MFD in Japan.

Interesting how the 4runner was still being manufactured in Japan while the Tacoma had already started manufacturing in the US. I would think manufacturing of 3rd gen 4runners ended in Japan when they moved to the 4th gen.

 

It because the US charges some crazy import tax on pickups

Was not aware they were still being built in Japan. Tax on trucks must be the reason.

 

Your Tacoma was not built in Long Beach, and TABC Inc. did not build it. However TABC did make some of the parts that went into your truck. For example, all of the beds were made by TABC.

I think the beds were built in Long Beach.

 

My dad did work for NUMMI and TABC up until NUMMI went defunct in 2010. All 1st gen tacomas were manufactured at NUMMI in Fremont, California. That same factory builds Teslas now.

TABC manufactures the bedsides and the cabs, mostly body panels. NUMMI assembled everything.
