At around 3:52, they drag race a 1st gen with a 3rd gen.

All my 1st gens were the V6 4x4 in 5 speed with 4.10 gearing. I think that's why it feels peppier right off the line. I did use to own a 2nd gen 6 speed and even though 4 liter had more torque and power, the weight was also more than a 1st gen. I'd say the 3rd gen is comparable to the 2nd gen. I did notice immediately that it needs to be in the higher rpms to move compared to a 2nd gen.

My purchase price for my LB OR 4X4 was 36,100 but when I factored in TTL, loan interest for 5 years, extended warranty coverage the total cost will be just under 41k for me.

There are plenty of variables on what the final price of the truck will cost you.

    Yup.

My '99 5MT 3.4L V6 feels like it has more pull from 1-2K RPM (from a stop). The '17 3.5L V6 6MT feels heavy and slower -though better than the auto- until you get it into the midrange. It feels fine near 3-4K RPM, and really comes alive from 4K-redline if you need it. If you hit it hard, the 3rd Gen will haul ass. I bet in a fair MT vs MT clutch drop 0-60mph test (ahem, not like the non-specific video above), it would be faster than the 1st Gen. That said, the from-a-stop heaviness feeling is always there in the 3rd Gen.

I also think the Toyota non-linear throttle control which softens your throttle tip-in reduces that immediate "jerk" feeling of acceleration (the third derivative of velocity, as in, how fast you are changing how fast you are changing speed). That probably contributes a lot to the dull, heavy feeling in the 3rd Gen.

My $0.02. Toyota needs to consider downsizing the Tacoma by 6" in length and 4" in width and do a moderate weight reduction. Then the truck would feel fast and get better mileage, and be easy(ier) to drive in a city like the 1st Gen.

I miss my 1st Gen. 3rd gen has a dead gas pedal feeling and lacks pep off the line. Also have had a ton of issues with my turd gen

3rd gen is faster than your 4 runner and the same as your 1st gen 0-60 and faster in 1/4. Read my post on times.
We won't even talk about 1st gen towing.

Takes a second to get into the rpms but once its there it takes off incredibly. You can really feel it taking off making up for not so quick off the line.

Well we all know neither gens are designed for power and speed. I'm sure the 1st gen being a manual has a lot to do with it seeming quicker and I'm willing to bet that is 4.10 gears in there. If Toyota wanted better mpg in the 3rd gen, they should have put it through a diet.

The price I told y'all was no trade. I'm not sure if that's the out the door pricing or not, I'll ask.

    Agreed.

I still wonder if there was truth to the pre-release rumor that the 2GR-FKS was supposed to be much more efficient per the design, but it didn't turn out as efficient as expected. I remember lots of "best in class efficiency" rumors/notes before the powertrain was revealed, and then all-of-a-sudden those claims were silenced for the trucks release. Makes you wonder what happened.

Edit: I swore someone wrote online that one of the materials used by the reps for the test drive event had something about best efficiency printed on it, and crossed out. Hrmm. I bet I can't find that reference now, of course.

I think when it come to liking, it's just a matter of opinion. I chose a 2nd gen for a reason.

My two 1st gens were fun and reliable but I love my 3rd gen a lot more. The only thing the 1st gens were better at were maneuvering smaller spaces, everything else the 3rd gen has beaten them so far.... as long as I get 12 years out of it like I did the 04.

Yes I had the opportunity to buy a brand new 2015 at below invoice right before 2016s were hitting the lot. I am still kicking myself for not pulling the trigger.

Well Toyota tested the 3rd gen drive train on a 2nd gen being that the two trucks are a lot a like, I don't think they could have achieved better efficiency. Then I started seeing the masked off 3rd gen running around town while they tested it. I just think that Toyota rushed the 3rd gen development.

After the reveal of the 2016, I didn't like the front end. I gave it a shot and test drove multiple configurations then I immediately purchased a 2015 before they ran out of choices.

Correct, yes it is but my you are quoting my direct reply to a 2015 which is a 2nd gen. I would never give up our 1st gen for a 3rd gen. - Or my 2nd gen for that matter.
