That 1st gen looks almost identical to my 04 silver AC.

    Too few to list.
Actually, I'd buy a 3rd gen access cab in 2.7 4x4 manual if I needed it. I can get over the front end with minor changes.

I would of had my dad buy it for me in a heartbeat. That's exactly what I was looking for, couldn't find it around here.

    Love my first gen!

Building the 3rd gen up to be what it's older brother is. Still have a ways to go, but it's going to be a well mannered brute.
    20161218_153624.jpg

I'm not really sure what all the complaining is about, but this new truck is great.
It does have some issues, just like the previous generation did. Nothing all that bad, and nothing that Toyota won't fix.
    So far I've noticed:
    The kazoo noise
    The bad hood brace glue
    A little transmission gear hunting
Lack of gear choices for the rear end as of today

For the money of some well equipped tacomas, you'd expect perfection, no trade-offs, and maybe even a "happy ending" every time you turn it off.
    Point being... It's damned expensive.

Compared to my 2001 and 2005 tacos... This third gen:
Is faster than both (hear me out) - it easily makes the 113mph limit. The first gen doesn't even come close, and the second gen is a few mph shy.
Off the line, the second gen wins to maybe 100 feet and keeps that lead until well after 60 mph where within 1/2 a mile the 3rd gen catches it.
Rolling 30mph to 80mph, the 3rd gen wakes up and wins.

For fuel mileage the third gen wins for sure.
It's only 2mpg or so better than the first gen, a good bit better than the second gen. I have a very heavy foot if that means anything... All this info is from my own experience and with that heavy foot.

The first gen seems more fun. Locker mod, burnouts and drifts whenever you want, small enough to fit anywhere... It's just a bad little beast. Age is however catching up with it.

The second gen is next in the fun list for all the mods and more power than the first.

The third gen, while great, is the least fun so far because I'm still making payments, mods aren't as readily available yet, the electronic nannies ruin most of the dumb shit you'd like to do and for the price there are still some issues.
I don't hate this truck or condemn it in any way for the perceived shortcomings.
    The issues will be resolved.
Mods will come about to remedy many of the nannies.
A turbo kit maybe? Hopefully... Sounds like a fun mod even though what's there is adequate.
It will be paid off soon and I won't care as much about trail damage.

I just don't understand the 3rd gen butthurt.
    It's a good truck.

I didn't think so..... having owned both, I liked my 1st gens but I have no regrets at all going up to a 3rd gen.

I think he was saying after the Engine was broke in he felt like it had more power, or it could be he just adjusted or adapted to it.

So did you get any useful info from the responses OP? Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about going from 1st to to 3rd gen. Whenever you ask about one gen vs. another on TW you will get a shitfest.

I'm a big fan of the old stuff. Admittedly as a 3rd gen owner, I love the polish the power and the room. But if I had a 1st in good condition and it was meeting my needs I would not upgrade.

The 1st are something special, they will be one of those timeless rigs we all oogle over in the future.

Just read on Road and Track 0-60 times. 2002 V6 0-60 9.1, 2016 DCSB offroad 4by4 manual 6.8. I have a DCLB Sport and it would smoke my Gen 1 and Gen 2.

    I don't believe the 3rd gen will smoke a 2nd gen...

But if you bought a truck to race, the Tacoma is the wrong idea... maybe the Ford lightning is more your speed :anonymous:

Numbers don't lie. I know for a fact my 3rd gen would smoke my 2nd gen. I'm not a racer...
