I am looking at getting a 1st generation Double Cab 4x4 TRD OFF ROAD, and I am wondering what kind of suspension is included in this package?
I know the second generations TRD OFF ROAD package included Bilstein shocks and the locking differential, what is included in the first generation OFF ROAD package? Is the upgraded suspension (if it has one) good?

Any info would be greatly appreciated, I have been searching on here but am having a hard time finding the answers.

Also, I am reading conflicting reports on whether or not the 1st generation has an available towing package and what the actual towing capacity is on a v6 Double cab 4x4

My '98 has the Bilstein shocks and push button rear locker.

The ride on the Bilsteins is friggen amazing in my opinion.

I was looking at a 2003, it didn't have the TRD OFF Road stickers, but I figured it was TRD OFF Road since it had the rear differential locker, however when I looked at the shocks, they were TOKIO shocks. I have never heard of them, (granted I am a newbie)

I can't speak on behalf of the 2003, but Bilsteins is OEM for the '98 TRD package.

I'm pretty sure that the tomiko shocks came on the 1st gen. double cabs & Bilstiens on the ex.cabs, but both (TRD) models had the locking diff option......

wow every person here has spelled TOKICO shocks a different way.

so yes, the 2003 TRD comes with bilstein shocks, a progressive spring rate and a rear locker.

no "tow package" was available in the usual sense. a class III hitch could be had but it didn't include a transmission cooler or different fan or anything. just the hitch and wiring

Tokicos, not Bilsteins, were included in the TRD Off Road Package on 2001 - 2004 Double Cabs.

A factory Tow / Towing Package was available during the 2001 - 2004 era. It included a Class III hitch and some other package-specific components (upgraded generator, different fan clutch, transmission oil cooler ...). This factory package was mentioned in the spec's listings, but never detailed in the options listings.

Hitches (with harnesses) were also available as factory or dealer / local accessories. These were sometimes referred to as 'towing packages' (just to make things more confusing).

Standard spec trailer weight capacity for a 2001 - 2004 V6 Double Cab was 3500 lbs. The spec rose to 5000 lbs. with the factory towing package mentioned above.

Now I am a little confused. Some of you are saying that there really was no towing package available and some of you are saying there was.
If there is a tow package available,
Is there any way to tell whether or not these 1st gen trucks have the towing package to make it 5000 pound capable (other than seeing if it has a hitch) because I realize someone could simply put on a hitch or even the rumor that some of these trucks had the towing package but no actual hitch installed.
