I have an 02 Tacoma V6 DC that runs great with low miles. However, looking to move up in size to another Tundra since I'm planning on a larger boat next year which would push the limits of the Tacomas towing rating.

With that said, what are the best and most troublefree years of the 1st Gen Tundras?

    Thanks

the first 2-3 years have consistently bad brake problems (wear pads quickly and some other issues i dont remember now)

i believe toyota addressed the issue and after the 3rd year and the brakes are upgraded but i forget exactly what they changed

2005 and 2006. The the only years with VVT-i and a 5 speed transmission (fantastic with towing).

2004-2006 only years available in DC.

Original Tundras had poor pad wear and warped rotors. The calipers stamped with S13WE were 199mm. The calipers were later replaced with the larger S13WL calipers which are 231mm.

05-06 looked the best too. The current tundra looks like a deformed dick

    Unichip makes one.
General consensus is it's a waste of money and makes your check engine light turn on.

I wouldn't waste my time on one. I had the borla dual exhaust and borla filter and was plenty happy with the performance and fuel economy

Regardless of what year you decide on, and depending on where you live (some areas are exempt from this recall)? Please be sure to remember some of these early Tundra's are suffering from severe frame rust so bad a few trucks need the frame replaced.

I have a friend dealing with this issue as we speak. Right above the control arm mount he has a hole rusted through that is 6" across, and approx 1" high. Granted, I'm not sure if the newer 1st generation tundra's such as the 05 and 06's are exempt because this issue was dealt with in the later model years? I'd hate to see anyone pay for something only to find out the frame has problems two or three years after I purchased it?

You may already know this being you own a 1st generation Tundra? I wanted to be sure you knew about this issue if you weren't already aware. However, I will say these trucks are great vehicles. Good Luck in your search!

i miss my 2000 i had. i sold it to my dad in 02 when i went to the marines and he drove it well over 300k miles. he sold it after he bought an 08. and still the 00 got way more road time than that big gas hog..lol

i do regret not buying an 06 a few years ago but they wouldnt give me anything on my trade in so i walked away from it.

i couldnt be any happier with my taco and ive always wanted a toyota ever since i first watch back to the future..haha and seeing my uncles drive tacoma's. great truck all around.

o yea my dad is thinking about selling his 08 tundra to get a tacoma...lol
