I guess it really boils down to what you want long term.

I've owned my 2002 since 2008 and it's been a great daily driver that just hit 350K on the 3RZ.

We bought a 2014 4Runner in 2019 to potentially replace it. We used it for car camping and road trips but sleeping inside of it w/ a rear drawer set up wasn't super comfortable. We decided to sell it in 2022 and buy another Tacoma. We checked out a few 2nd gens but the asking prices were stupid high. Over $28K for something with close to or over 100K miles. We ended up putting the money into a new third gen DCLB. It's not our daily driver but I see the potential it has for truck camping in the near future. Gear hunting isn't a huge deal on flats but when going through hilly areas, you can definitely feel it. I may get a tune later this year but I've been happy with the 2023 since I got it in early January.

IMO the pinnacle of Toyota build quality was ~2000-2006. The 1st gen Taco, Tundra and Sequoia, 100 series, Lexus etc will always be the best quality vehicles Toyota ever built

I’m coming from a 3rd gen to a 1st gen Taco and Tundra.

3rd gen drives great, is smooth quiet and rides nice. 1st gen is loud rough and small lol

Hard to beat the 4.7. But both the 1st gens have skyrocketed in price.

    Still miss the Bro-Coma

Both 1st gens have over 320k on them
