truck is brand new with 2k miles on it....it has started making a pitter patter sound while sitting at idle....so im going to ask them about it when i bring it in for 1st oil change....i bought it from a dealer 1/2 hr away and it came with 3? free oil changes..... questions are....
    1. can i take it in for my free oil change whenever i want or do i have to wait til the recommended 5k?
    2. can i redeem my free change at a closer dealership or is it location specific?

    thanks guys!

If you're talking about the Toyota Care maintenance any dealer can do that for you. First oil change isn't due until 10k miles though. That first service is tire rotation, multi point inspection, and fluid top-off. Not sure if they will do it out of order under Toyota Care but you can certainly pay for the oil change yourself if they won't.

I have no idea what a "pitter patter" sound is so can't advise on whether you should wait until your first oil change at 10,000. I expect it's just the "Tacoma Tick" from the direct injection which is normal on these trucks.

Personally, I don't take advantage of "free" oil changes with all the horror stores of dealers screwing things up. I also change my oil at 5,000 miles as opposed to the recommended 10,000 miles.
I've changed my oil at 5,000 miles on my '96 Tacoma that currently has 414,000 trouble-free miles on it so no use in doing anything different for my '18 TRD Sport.

First oil change 10k miles or 1 year...whatever comes first. If having less than 10k miles....get them to replace the oil filter also...dealer here claimed they weren't obligated to do it till i had 10k miles. They only changed the oil.

I've got just under 9,000 miles and scheduled my 10k service yesterday. I have some summer trips coming up in two weeks and will be putting at A LOT of miles on the truck. They never even asked me what the mileage was.

This is your truck and if ANYTHING is bugging you take it in. I had my 5k service done when I brought it in for something else(I had about 4k on it then).

Here come the flood of people that will tell you that in 1873 they did their first oil change at 1k and their car engine lasted 72 years. The words "cheap insurance" and "myself" will come a lot.

I did my 1st oil change @ 5,000 miles (along with the service), I paid. Again @ 10,000 miles, Toyota paid. I will have them change oil @ 15,000 miles and I'll pay again.
Then at 20,000 Miles is the last free oil change, I guess??
Toyota dealership oil changes aren't any more expensive as the quickee oil change shops.

For 6 quarts synthetic and filter, a little over $50.

In 1873 I did my first oil change at 1k miles and my previous car lasted 72 years. It's "cheap insurance" that I don't mind doing myself. :humble:

I did my first at 5k miles. Dealer said that I get 3 (or was it 5?) "free" oil changes, and I can use them whenever and at any dealer I wanted to. They recommend every 10k miles but since I hardly drive it (bought new in Jan 2020 and as of today only have 6k miles on it) I'm doing it because I hate the thought of those chemical byproducts of combustion sitting there and slowly etching into the metal, whether or not that is a valid concern.

I filed a complaint with with Toyota corporate in Texas over my selling dealer refusing to apply a transmission update. Not only did I get a call from the Service Manager and the update, I was also put on the dealer's "Friends & Family" plan and will get 10K oil changes done there for free for the life my '17 Limited.

Did someone say, "Amsoil"?! I've been running that in my blender since new and I can make 22 margaritas in 6 minutes and 33 seconds without any gear whine! Blackstone told me that my oil sample anaylsys indicated that I should extend my OCI to 50 margaritas but I think I am going to stick with 30 for peace of mind.

Please remember, in addition to a mileage component of oil life, there is a time component. I changed mine at 1500 on my own dime. At one year I hadn't reached 10,000 so the dealer did the free oil change. I've never been comfortable with 10,000 on my previous Tundras. I'm a 5000 mile guy. And that's a stretch for someone who came up on a 3000 mile schedule.
