Don't worry about the 10K oil change. That is actually conservative with synthetic oil and modern vehicles. There is at least one Tacoma out there that was still going strong at 1.2 million miles as of a couple of years ago that had the oil changed at 10,000 miles. And I know at least one person who made it 100,000 miles plus without ever changing their oil. And who knows how long it would have gone if they had just topped it off.

Cheap insurance isn't always cheap. There are guys literally spending more to service their transmissions than it would cost to just wear it out and replace it.

To each his own. I was raised to take care of my stuff not just throw it out. But, my parents were depression era kids. Most kids today have no comprehension of going without or making do. It will bite them in the butt one day.

Sometimes it’s hard to have a different opinion without sounding like a know it all or an a hole but I just don’t believe an engine will make it 100k with no oil change and without some type of failure.

if you can do it yourself, do it. If you cant, bring it in. Simple as that. Plenty of horror stories on here of damaged wheels, loose lug nuts, overtightened lug nuts, stripped lug nuts, damaged skid plates, missing skid plate hardware, overtightened and cracked oil filter housings, oil leaks afterwards, oil messes afterwards, wrong amount of oil added, etc. Just remember the master techs arent changing your oil, its the 17 year old with little to no experience. The bottom of the totem pole.

Changed my oil today at 1700 miles, oil looked good. Just a little metal flake in the oil filter which I think is normal. I changed it early because in my 2020 4runner there was a lot of metal in my filter at 2k mile first oil change.IMG_0853 3.jpg

With a few exceptions, I have always done my own oil changes.

The last two times I took a Camry and Corolla to stealership for oil change, on both occasions, and prior to leaving, I popped the hood to inspect and discovered a puddle of oil around the filler cap and the air filter box cover was not properly secured.

IMHO, oil belongs in the engine not on the outside where it will accumulate dirt and become a baked on grungy mess.

Someone once commented that dealerships are Lemon Factories.

Who know what evil lurks in dealership service departments?

Until the oil filter is so full of metal/debris that it cannot support the volumetric flow required by the pump changing it early makes no difference.... It also can't hurt.

You joined just to post that?

...and, No, I don't know what kind of evil lurks. Is it the Lord of the Rings kind or the Dr. Evil kind?

I think the tick you're hearing is probably the injector cleaning cycle. It almost sounds like a valve tick but it's normal on these trucks.

I can't remember the actual TSB, but it had to do with a transmission shudder around 40 MPH.

I could not agree more. I took mine on for its first service last month, which included only a tire rotation, check of the floor mats and visual on the fluids. They could not even get my truck started to move it out of the intake area and tried to jump start my new truck! Reason? Not one, but 2 service employees did not recognize that my truck was a manual transmission and did not push in the clutch! Suspecting that they had not left my truck as they found it, I cracked the hood when I got home, and sure enough they had left the positive battery terminal off the battery, hanging down the back of the battery, from when they tried to jump start it with no success. Incidentally, they came to get me in the customer lounge 30 minutes later to see if I could give them some insight on why it wouldn’t start. I am terrified as to what is going to happen at my first oil change.

The few times I’ve needed dealership service I have had no qualms popping the hood right in the service bay when the return my vehicle. Service writers aren’t happy but hey, if they did a better job folks wouldn’t question them.

I use up the Toyota Care but double check their work then I am doing my own oil changes.... also I never (or should I say rarely) use a dealer for service.... I have enough phone a friends that can lead me in the general direction and so far I have been able to fix everything.... but proper maintenance and driving style help alot with preventing ever needing them....

I already got the "threaded oil filter drain tool with a tube" and may or may not get the oil drain pan valve (fumoto or something like that) .... I probably will as it will make for a much cleaner/quicker less hassle of an oil change

Stock wheels and suspension. Random "utilitarian" mods featured on this great forum.
I changed mine at 4500 and looked the same. Some larger shavings like that spattered throught the pleats. Not at all concerned but changing your own lets you monitor things like this vs the dealer just chucking the old one or worse, not changing it altogether.
