Hi, I have been browsing here since I got my truck off and on 5 years ago, so sort of new here but never posted yet, so howdy. I own a 2000 SR5 v6 with 155k on it so far.

So I am looking for help as I cannot find anything similar to my issue. I changed out my transmission filter with a new one and added 2 quarts of Valvoline Dexron II/III fluid back in. Dip stick says it’s just a tad short of full when it’s warmed up. Since I did this 1st is slipping and having trouble shifting into gear at random times. Happens when it’s warm or cold, going from a stop or shifting from R or N. The RPM’s will climb between 1k and about 1800 before it moves into gear. I also noticed that it seems like I have a tad more get up and go power than before I did the change.

I really didn’t have any issues before I did the filter change, but I purchased my truck used from a dealer and had no idea when it was, or if it was ever serviced for the fluids. I also learned a few days ago through here that you should change the fluid out every 30k miles, so that’s new to me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated or pointers as to what’s happening with the 1st gear. This is my dream truck and in its current configuration, it’s what I always wanted since I was 16 and want to keep it as workable as possible.

    4 run, 2 don't
Too much or too little fluid can have weird, ill effects.

    Confirm your fluid level correctly.

If it didn’t get changed until 155k then new fluid would flush out a bunch of gunk that is essentially holding the transmission together.

If that be the case here, there are additives to help correct this. It probably would have been better to save the oil that came out to add back in this case but I'm sure someone can chime in to confirm.

X2 Most likely if you add enough to get the level right, you will be OK. Don't dilly-dally! get it done!

Little late of a reply. Drove it for about 120 miles combined in one day. Checked the fluids. If I am reading it right it is super low. When you do a filter change it’s 2 quarts to fill it back up again isn’t it, or did I do a conversion wrong? Either that or I have a leak that I didn’t see maybe.
Also I have a really hard time getting my dip stick back into position to were I have to practically force it the last 3” in. Is this normal or did I break something

I have a 96 and a 2003 the dip sticks can be a pain getting back in !

Okay , about 4 years ago my transmission started slipping real bad when ever it would shift into high gear. My fix at that time was turning the overdrive off. (BTW the 96 is my daily driver and still is. )
I was very nervous it was just a matter of time before i was gonna hafta replace the auto trans.....yikes !
One of my mechanic friends said put some Lucas transmission stop slip in it. I had nothing at all to lose. Im so sold on this stuff it has been over 4 years without a slip and yes i leave it in overdrive. That stuff is a miracle.

Ive changed transmission fluid in the past , heck yeats ago i use to have my chevys flushed and it usually had problems as soon as i drove it outta the shop. When vehicles are new you should follow the routine maintenance. But when there old like our 1st gens......i believe don't wake a sleeping dog.

Did you follow a walkthrough from here on TacomaWorld/YouTube or just drain, replace filter and fill? Ideally you want to drain into measured container, fill with exact amount drained then cycle through the gears and repeat until the fluid drained is clean and red.

Did it on my own. Thought it was the same process as my 03 Ford Focus. Now I am having major doubts on the correct fluid level. I will check it out again on my next days off.
I also forgot about that Lucas stuff. Put some into my Focus when I was having transmission slipping as well and it was a miracle worker. I’ll have to pick some up from Kragens before I go to work. Thanks for the help so far guys. I greatly appreciate it. I work nights so tomorrow morning I’ll swing by my truck and look at the levels again and go from there. See if I can’t get my brother to tag along or check it himself for a second pair of eyes.

If your reading is "super low", then that is most likely your issue. Add some more fluid.

Thought I would hop back and complete this. Had a second set of eyes check it. Glad I did. Was way to low. Had to add about 2 1/2 quarts back into it. Might need to drain a small amount out but will need to tinker with it later this week. Thank you for the help guys, and thanks Tacomav6 for reminding me of the Lucas stuff. I feel it did help it immensely.
