I agree, the factory way seems kind of a bizarre.

Ha! Essentially, each gear has its own tune. This will just mess with the mind of most MTs drivers.

This is totally unrelated but does anyone know if 5th gear is an overdrive in the 6mt or is 6th gear the only overdrive gear

That's pretty wack. The URD Short Shifter helps a bunch

Just wondering here, are there do’s and don’ts when it comes to OD gears? Like don’t pull a heavy trailer in 5/6?

I feel 3 - 3.5K is the sweet spot - what frustrates me more than anything is when you get it just right and the power delivery falls off at first then picks up, its almost like traction control is kicking in.

Yep. Only go to 5th and 6th if you are truly coasting along.

That's something I have been wondering as well. I don't have anything I need to tow right now but I'd like to know as well if I do. But if I had to guess I'd say use 4th for hills and most of the time. And maybe 5th for when it's flat or downhill.

Punch-it till redline in first Gear. Shift into second as fast as you can without letting off the gas.

    That's how it's done Son.

5th gear in the Auto is 0.72:1, that's the equivalent of 6th for us.

    Upgrade Mishimoto Weighted shift knob
    1st to second 2.75
    2nd to 3rd 2.50
    3rd to 4th 2.25

1st thru 3rd gears are pretty clunking and it defently drives like a truck. 4th thru 6th if your good and have speed you can shift really quickly point to point and the clutch feels like its not really even doing anything and it will shift smooth like a car. I have a taller heavier shift knob, this will help. Took me some miles to get it down.

Dont baby it too much, it should improve but I recommend getting a taller and heavy shift knob also, it will help with leverage.

Dont take off too slow and let the RPM build! You will hate this truck if you drive that way.

Dont baby it off the line.

I feel like my 6MT really started to break in ~30k miles, Now at 45k its like butter. Ok, not like my BMW was, but very good.

Also, maybe its the nature of a truck transmission but to get into 1st gear smoothly, really need to be at ZERO mph (My german cars and iirc my old 4cyl 1st Gen would easily slip into first when not under load but not completely stopped.)
