Getting ready to 1UZ swap my 98 2.4. Can anyone help me out with everything I’m going to need? Should I keep the manual or go with auto. Plan on 4 linking it in the future

Maybe you might want to research some of the swap threads and ask more detailed questions!

Where is your weakest area for skills the fabrication end or the wiring etc?

Your going to need the EWD`s of the donor vehicle and your vehicle.. Have you decided what year Donor your going to use ?

What do you want for drive train it comes down to you .

You’re right sorry for being so vague. I have been doing research it seems like every 2rz or 3rz thread never got finished. I can do a little bit of everything but I’m not super great at one thing. I was also going to ask if anyone had an opinion on the 92 non vvti or the later vvti models. I haven’t decided about a donor car. I was thinking about just buying the motor and harness. But I’ll also look around junk yards. I was also going to ask if anyone had rear diff problems at 300hp

I guess your gonna get real good at changing differentials if you can`t keep your foot off the throttle

I had a friend with this swap at the most his differentials lasted about 2 weeks Then he never grew up still thought he was 25

Build the differential then the next week link fails

You want to buy a running engine something you can drive and unless the plan is to completely rebuild it.

After so many swaps I have learned each one is different there are only general guide lines.

Keeps lots of notes and diagrams nothing worse then a year later then have no idea just what you did.

lots of people either get in over there head and give up or run out of money

    Good luck no matter!

    pinstripes. lots of pinstripes.
Non VVTI are less complicated and I think they have stronger (somewhat) internals - thicker connecting rods and the like. From what I know related to Mk3 Supras, the W58 manual trans was good to around 400hp and the R154 had no issues. I think the pickups and Tacomas used similar manuals so I'd use that as a starting point. Diffs were never an issue with the 1UZ swaps I was familiar with - most of the factory Supra diffs had no issues holding power. Not sure if the pickups used something similar or weaker.

If you can, buy the whole car for the swap since you'll most likely keep going back for pieces, parts, brackets, sensors, wiring, etc.

Drag truck the goal? Drift? Autox?

    Currently a full 2.4 driveline in a 5 lug ?

If yes, I'd guess you'll need a full beefed up driveline or a soft foot, especially with sticky tires.

@Torspd probably can point you to some good components.

The original 1UZ only had about 250 hp and around 270 lbs ft of torque. I would think most later different could handle that

Manual transmission for sure, you'll need to get a kit to adapt the one you already have if you have one

Get a spitronics ecu/harness with coil on plug provisions, get the Audi R8 coils

That'll be the cheapest least roundabout fuck around way to get it done

Before you put the engine in take it down to the block and replace everything like the bearings and seals/gaskets/rings

Get the vvti head gaskets even if you get a non vvti

Cx racing has 1uz swap mounts for "Tacoma's" doesn't say 2/3rz or 5vz... Not sure it matters if the perches are the same... Just the position in the engine bay it would sit in

    The diff will be fine.
It's the same diff for 1st gen, 2nd gen, 3rd gen, 1st and 2nd gen Tundra for that matter, they got the V8's too.
    I vote for manual trans.

I have a 1uz sitting but no money or worthy donor

You can honestly just by throwing your wallet at it get the hard stuff done

Motor mounts, wire harness/ignition, transmission/ flywheel/ clutch/ pressure plate/ bell housing, driveshaft shop, exhaust shop

you'd just need to fab a crossmember that would hold the trans where it ends up bolted to the engine while in the car

figure out your ac lines and take them to a shop to be made or experiment with one of those electric ac pumps and still need to figure out your lines but would probably be easier

Figure out the power steering pressure line or experiment with one of those electric pumps and still have to figure out lines but it would probably be easier

    Radiator hoses, and heater lines

    Making a charging/staring harness

I am almost done with a 1UZ swap in a 99 Tacoma Prerunner single cab, six lug, previously a 3RZ 4cyl, don’t know how much help or advise i could give due to our frames are different. I can tell you its a LOT of work and its EXPENSIVE, have documented cost and parts bought, started with a non drivable 1993 SC400, just to get engine prepared for install cost $1329 in parts, currently have spent over $5000. total, a plug and play wire harness is almost $2000 of that, so if you are a wiring guru and a good welder you could get off a little cheaper includes price of car ($800). you can pm me with questions, as someone else here mentioned Kelvin at Cartunes of N.Z. is a great source of info watch his youtube vids.......twice, also Wes at Northwest Toys is great help/source bought motor mounts from them.
    Hope this was enlightening

So if I used transmission n cluster board would just need a stand alone to plug the 1uz harness in or a conversation harnesses still need it.

Thats a loaded question, how are you wiring your swap? stand alone or fully integrated? Basically i ran new cables to starter, on my truck the start trigger wire was in a four pin connector under fuse box, i think it was a black wire the other 3 in connector went to the alternator. My turn….why are you doing this? your avatar indicates you are turbo charged which can be done cheaper and have more HP

@LilSmokE i don’t think you know of the rabbit hole you’re getting yourself into with a 1uz swap. if it’s just a couple thousand more logic, might as well LS3 swap. That will make more power than the 1uz swap and the ls3 weighs less with more support.

Hopefully you haven’t bought that stand alone harness yet, thats a long way to do business South Africa?
There is a business in Florida called Lexus V8, their specialty is stand alone harnesses for the 1UZ, 2UZ and the 3UZ, I believe thats who Malek used for his harness and was very happy with reults. True the LS1 or LS3 swap is instant better horsepower, i don’t believe they are lighter than the gen1 1UZ and not as well engineered for sure my opinion.
