Now, we have seen the Toyota NEW 2.0L Turbo I-4 for the upcoming Lexus NX and IS. What do you guys if Toyota decides to put this in the Tacoma? I like the idea a lots, with 235 hp and 258 ft-lb of torque this engine is perfect to replace the current 2.7L I-4? We won't say NO to 30+ mpg neither.

With little more tuned (like 250 hp, 280 ft lb) this can also replace the V6 as well.

Not a motor suited for a truck.

I'd like to see the dyno for that motor to see when it hits peak hp and tq. Like you said, could be a motor greatly suited to replace the 2.7

Peak numbers mean nothing.... That motor probably produces much less HP an tq down low where its needed.

Didn't realize the current 4 banger was such a powerhouse in the low RPM range.

I havent seen anything on it, but with a small enough snail boost would be available in lower rpms meanin tq was available in lower rpms, plus all 4 cylinders are gonna operate at higher rpms, just the nature of the beast. FI FTW

On a related note, will this be an option for the frs?

Anyone familiar with current 4cyl turbo motors would tell you the torque is there and can be had low in the range. I traded a Golf R, 265hp and 260 or so torque. Most of it by about 2200 rpm. Throw a chip on it and it'd be good for like an additional 30hp and 60ft/lbs.

The OP also suggested it could possibly replace the V6.

    With a different Tune..

You can tune a 4cyl Turbo to over 900 hp.. so it just depends on how its tuned

You said that OP said it could also replace the V6. Perhaps I misunderstood your context but it seemed like you didnt believe that and I was simply pointing out that it was possible

That motor might actually make the FR-S an interesting car, but I doubt many truck buyers would want it.

I was just pointing out to Pugga the V6 was mentioned also. That said I would never buy a truck with a 4 banger, turbo or not. I've owned numerous cars with 2.0T and they make power well above 3k rpm. But a truck needs power and torque down low to tow or haul loads. A 2.0T I4 would be terrible for towing and hauling.

The ecoboost makes all its power at 2500 rpm compared with the 5 liter at 5000 rpm or above. Toyota will have to do something with the tacoma or tundra to improve the milage or I wont be buying another one or its getting traded in.

It very likely could if the engine is set up properly. The Ecoboost was mentioned earlier and it's a perfect example of what a smaller twin turbo engine is capable of. Ford is supposedly coming out with a smaller, 4 banger Ecoboost for their F150 customers who don't need the higher capacity (which could mean it's still capable of towing what the current Tacoma is rated for). It's certainly possible and feasible.

FWIW, the V6 does make decent power down low but peak is still pretty high in the RPM range.

I believe Fords smaller ecoboost is a 2.7L turbo v6.
