    Does anyone know if the 2.4 from a 2004 tacoma will work to replace one in a 1998?

    I believe the blocks are the same or close but you may have to use your top end parts. hopefully someone will chime in for ya

    I THINK the water pump is different, pretty sure the throttle body is different, but most of the main will work

    Blocks are the same. The water pump and the front timing cover are all the same. You do need to watch out for 4 or 8 ports on the intake. Valve covers are different as the 98 is wasted spark and the 04 is COP. Wiring harness and ecu will be different also. Like frizzman said it will work but you may need to use your bolt on top end parts, IIRC the head is the same depending on intake port configuration, that being said the upper intake manifold is swappable between the two so it really doesn't matter.

    4 inch maxtrac spindle, bilstiens 5100 adjustables, 2in block
    Do you use the 04 ecm when you swap the too end parts of do i use the 98 ecm or just buy a new one ?
