I recently did this upgrade to my icon 2.5s and I'm starting to wonder if I've made a massive mistake. Has anyone felt like they've lost all up travel with the stiffer springs? I expected some but I feel like it's worse. It's also been hard to really test then as most of the trails that would put them through the paces are buried in 2ft of snow. I do have a plate bumper and winch on the front end as well. I'm probably reading too much into it, but I thought I'd ask

You wouldn't technically lose up travel, but if you don't have enough weight on the front end it could be hard to overcome the spring rate.

No one told me to do anything. The fact that the seals on these shocks got blown out cause 650lb springs weren't enough.

2.7L Access Cab? Your starting point is a lot lighter than mine running those springs. 700lb coils on a DCSB 4.0L with plate bumper/winch/skid and sliders work well.

Can you give some more detail how that happened?

The 650s weren't enough for what?

I've got the same setup as Eric and the 700lb coils were a huge upgrade over the 650s. Sounds like your truck is a little light for the the bigger springs. I would prescribe armor, a winch, and a fat girl to help soften the ride.

It might be a 2.7 but she's a fat pig tipped the scales at 5100lbs before I added the winch. When I added the winch my headlights were pointing at the ground. I run a full plate bumper winch equipped as mentioned, Sliders, 3/8ths Skids (full set) lca Skids and a rear plate bumper with a high lift and 35" tire hanging off the back.

The weight of the plate bumper and the winch

I haven't been able to fully test them cause the trails that would be putting them to the test are still under 2ft of snow. I climbed up a lock block yesterday and it didn't seem like I was getting much in the way up up travel. I was just wondering if anyone had a similar experience. I love the the feel and the look but if it's killing performance I'll have to ditch them

So the springs were collapsed keeping the shocks bottomed out? Which blew the seals?

The whole '650 springs blew the seals but 700 springs won't' logic is what I'm trying to understand.

I know its an increase of 50lbs per inch of spring travel, but I'm not grasping how that will make the same shock survive.

You're forgetting they're also longer than the factory icon spring. Moving on, iI'll start from the top. I bought used blown shocks from a friend who explained how they were used and what was on the truck which was an arb bumper with winch Sliders etc and after a few months of wheeling the shocks began to leak oil badly. I took them to a shop explained the exact same way and they agreed that if I put a bumper and winch on I'd want to up the spring rate but at the time 650 was fine. Fast forward a year and a half I put a winch on and upped the spring rate and here I am

Stil doesn't affect blowing out seals

They blew because they are old and used

Shocks can go anytime. Sucks but true. Get them rebuit by someone who knows how to, maybe re valved, maybe put the other springs back in.

Just the thread I was looking for...
Anyone else care to share their experience with this coil setup?
I have come across people saying that it is really hard to add any preload, some even said you needed a spring compressor to do so.
I'm not looking to add much preload, if any. I just want to be able to level the front out and all its weight with my dakar leaf pack in the rear.
Very interested in stepping up to the 700# coil with the bumper, skids, that I already have, I feel like it has taken quite the toll on my 650# coils. Plus I look to add more weight in the future.

I should probably update this.. turns out my down travel was pretty much 0 as I failed to notice my tc Ucas were maxed out... when I went to adjust the shocks the collars wouldn't move even after using a spring compressor which later broke. I took them to a local off road shop and turns out they believe the collars are cross threaded somehow. New parts have been ordered and they're gonna freshen them up for me as they feel cutting off the colliars is best as to avoid damaging the threads further.

Thanks, that's a bummer about being cross threaded. Anyone else with feedback?

I have 700s on icons, multiple setups on multiple rigs at various times. They adjust just as easy as my 650s. I know a few others with 700s and they have no issues adjusting the collar either. Personally I feel that 700x14 are perfect on anything other than a stock rig, but i prefer a more stiff ride.

Edit... But i have no experience with 2.7 rigs and icons.
