I just did a full rebuild on my 1999 Tacoma 4x4 with the 2.7 3rz and a 5 speed. It will crank over but not start. It has started twice but only for about 10 seconds before dying again I have not been able to get it to start again since then. I bought the truck and after driving it for a few weeks I spun a rod bearing as well as 2 main bearings I found out after tearing the motor apart.

I have put new everything into it (crank, pistons, timing chain and assembly, valves, new gaskets and bearings all around, water and oil pumps, full cooling system with hoses, radiator, thermostat, spark plugs, injectors, clutch, belts). I had the head and block decked and new valves seated by a shop I’ve had do heads for me before and they do good work. The truck will crank but not start. The battery is good the starter was replaced 1000 miles ago before I bought it. has 262,319 miles on it and the head is newer according the the guy I bought it from it has about 30,000 miles on it. Sometime before I bought the truck it was ran without oil leading to 2 of my main bearings and a rod bearing to fail. I’m in need of some insight of why it won’t start after I rebuilt I’ve tried a lot of the common issue that a 3rz won’t start after a head job with sensors and fuel stuff other threads have said to check. I’ve checked the spark plugs by pulling them out and arcing them to the block while cranking it over and all of them are sparking fine The fuel rail is getting fuel. So it’s getting fuel, spark, and air. All my vacuum hoses are connected in the correct places and have no leaks. I’ve checked all my sensors and made sure there plugged in correctly.

This is my first 3rz I’ve ever owned and worked on I have a feeling the reason is going to be something dumb why it’s not starting but I need some help figuring that out. All the 3rz guys I would love some insight on this issue.

    nope....
what you posted is a no crank / no start....

op has a crank / no start....

If you have spark, you hear the injectors clicking with a stethoscope while cranking...
Any possibility the distributor isnt in right?
assuming it has one, im not familar with the engine configuration.

    Does it have a distributor?
The rotor needs to be timed to the engine...

So its sounds like it sat awhile, how long did it sit while you gave the engine a once over. You said you have fuel at the rail do you have good fuel pressure? I'm assuming fresh gas. When they sit a 25 year old fuel pick up sock and pump can get clogged. Unless it's new.

the truck sat with a full tank of gas for little under 3 months. I don’t believe the fuel pick up sock is new and have not checked but the pressure is there I wouldn’t say it’s great but there is some pressure. Do you think It may not be enough?

3 months is no worries, I let mine sit a couple years while installing another engine and my first crank gave me nothing also. I had some gas at fuel rail but not enough. So I put new FP and sock in it was crusty. Mine Fired right up but 3 months is nothing. Not sure about checking fuel pressures with a gauge on your motor someone might chime in.

Suck, squeeze, bang, blow. Got compression?

Pull a spark plug and put it back into the plug wire, ground it and have someone crank her over, do you have spark? Does the truck have a tach, if so, does it wiggle when you crank it. If she has spark squirt a little carb clean / starting fluid into the intake and crank her, if she starts then you have a fuel issue.

it has compression not sure the exact numbers but cranking it by hand before putting it in the truck had plenty of compression.

Pull a coil out and put something metal in it and see if it will throw a spark to a ground. But obviously take precautions...it will wake you up for sure.

ETA, just read that you have already verified spark to ground. Hmm.

As I said in my first post I have pulled the spark plugs and grounded them to the block and they do have spark. It does have a tach and it does wiggle slightly when starting. I have tried starting fluid and carb cleaner in the intake to start it with no luck.

Yeah, sorry missed that in your OP, I am drinking beer and watching hockey.

Does it ever act like it wants to run? Any hints of firing at all?

All these details are in my first post but yes I has sputtered up twice for about 10 seconds and then dying. But it is just cranking over it seems as if nothing has a will to start or run at all

I have no other advice but to check all the grounds and make sure their good and tight.
