I'm looking at getting a 1999 4wd Tacoma and the new one says it has 4.10 gears. It's a 4cyl with an auto trans. My current Prerunner is a v6 auto, and it also says 4.10 gears. Isn't the 2.7 supposed to have 4.56 gears?

Only reason I ask, is my Prerunner has Detroit Truetrac in the rear diff and if it's the same gear ratio I want to swap 3rd members before I sell the Prerunner.

2.7 trucks came with all sorts of different gears depending on the options. My '96 4x4 was stock with 3.58 gears and 28 inch tires.

Reading your gear code and deciphering it is a good way to start figuring it out.

The code says 4.10 gears, same as my prerunner. But I read in a couple forums where the door code isn't the most accurate system in the world.

You can always jack up the rear end, put it in neutral, then spin the drive shaft by hand and count how many times the wheels go round.

I have a 03 2.7 and I think mine are 4.30's with 265/75/16's. I think the gearing is low which would be typical for a 4 cylinder. I am also a manual. Im wanting to put 285/75/16's and was worried about gearing but I think it will work out considering how low my gearing is.

To the OP, a bit more detail. Don't blame you for not particularly trusting stickers.

Yep. My door code says 4.10, same as my Prerunner. I'll confirm it but it looks like it should just be a simple 3rd member swap to keep my Truetrac. That will be sweet

    OP,
Strange, I also have a 1999 4wd with the 2.7 and I have the 4.56 gears. I thought they all did. Maybe the size of the tires determined the axle ratios at the factory. You should be good to go.

When you pull the third from the pre-runner, the ratio should be stamped on the ring gear (or at least the teeth counts so you can do your own division).

It has small tires, like 225/75/15. I'm gonna swap it to 31s tho since I have new A/T's

I think it was pretty common for the autos to have a lower ratio like yours to make up for the power the auto trannys use up, where as the manuals got the higer gearing.

    FWIW both mine are 4.10

My 99 2.7 TRD Prerunner came with 4.56 as well. It came stock with 31x10.50r15 tires.

EDIT: My truck actually came with 4.30 gears, I was incorrect when I posted this 10 years ago.

Maybe it's 4.10 because it came with 225s. I put 31s on it and it doesn't seem much different. And the speedometer is dead on with the 31s

Just because a set-up is stock, that doesn't mean that's what it rolled off the lot with. Dealers will do crazy things like swap tires from one truck to another to make a sale, so the "stock" for your truck might not be what the original purchaser got.

Yeah but the door sticker says it came with 225 from the factory. So maybe that's why it has 4.10 gears. If it came with 31s from the factory maybe it would have got 4.56
