Ok guys! lets get a 2.7 love thread going. The main reason i bought my tacoma with the 2.7 4cyl was for reliability and its just what im used too. My last vehicle was a 2000 4runner with the 2.7 and damn was that thing reliable! 240k miles and it was still handling my 100 mile a day commute! I knew i absolutely had to buy the 2.7. Sure its slow and supposedly gets the same mpg as the v6 but i get 24mpg all day! I believe this exact motor has been in production for 13 years so that must tell us something. Im definetly curious to see the next generation of 2.7 toyota has to offer. So why did you guys go with the 2.7?

The 2.7 with a manual is an all around stronger and more reliable truck. The trans is rated to a higher input torque the trans and t-case are 23 spline output, they got the larger 8.75" rear axle and I believe all were assembled in Texas.

    Still miss here :frusty:

The manual behind it is tried and true, the motor is simple and tried and true. Could use a little more pep, one day I'll throw in a small turbo and run 5 psi. 200-230hp would be ideal.

Thing looks awesome. I miss my 2003 2.4l 4-banger very much. Sometimes wish I didn’t buy the V6

I’m going to make a little nest in this thread.

    Engine/tranny combo is intense.

Slow? Meh. I’ll break every speed limit we have and possibly double it, and I can’t off road as fast as thing can spin. It’s plenty powerful. 4 banger manual is so much fun to drive.

I'm hoping to take over my gfs 2.7 when she gets tired of it. Lift my v6 and do all the mods to it, keep hers for my commute. The 3rd gen 2.7 is so smooth. My v6 buzzes, whirrs, chunks, shakes, etc etc. But her 2.7 is buttery smooth. It seems the 2.7 has been perfected in the 3rd gens

My 2.7 auto handles the daily commute just fine and idles all over Moab as good as any V6.

Sometimes all that extra horsepower is just wasted.

I got the 2.7 for dependability. A 2019 SX 2.7 ac with a bunch of mods. My previous taco was a 95 and the 2.7 got to just a hair under 400,000 hard miles before I sold her...running like new and never opened up.

I don’t think it’s under powered compared to the v6. I drove them both and found neither to be particularly powerful. Figured if I was going to buy a motor without impressive power...I’d get a reliable one that was easy to work on.

I’ve got a 18 4Runner TRD with the 4.0 as well. Not a very big difference there either and if I could have got the 2.7 in that...I would have

I don't see the AC 2.7 offered in a 4x4 Manual - Did they stop selling that combo?

I though the 4 auto drove nice and the utility pkge was like 2 grand cheaper. 10 k miles in 9 Months and very happy with it ! My dealer put in a remote start / door lock which I really enjoy!!

Generally speaking, I’m with you. Unless you are RACING off road, in a truck that is actually built to handle high speeds, nobody uses the extent of their power off road. That being said, the V6 doesn’t really qualify as having unusable power. I think the Atkinson kicks off when you mash on the pedal, so it’s possible that when off roading with the v6, it’s always in Atkinson, therefore it’s always neutered, giving you 107 or 117 hp. Or something like that, how I read it.

Exactly this. If I wanted a high tech performance vehicle of any kind it wouldn’t be a Tacoma or any Toyota for that matter.
