Coming from a 2009 4 door sr5 4x4 to my 2012 reg.cab was a little scary.but this little truck goes places my 4 door had trouble.she is easier to drive .feels like you can fit anywhere and it does.second they take a beating.i live where thier is alot of highway overpasses and thier is always windy in the summer months and my automatic is not the quickest up the incline but it has no problems keeping up.sometimes we have 35 to 45 mph winds out here, and i have to shift it into 3rd but she grabs and go's.second when i use the 4x4, DAMN she turns into a mean little sob.this thing was made to be in the dirt.just waiting to get more$ to put that lce header and a 3inch lift.

Went from a 1992 extended cab Toyota 4x4 to this beauty. A 4 cyl, regular cab, with a 4wd was almost exactly what I wanted. A manual transmission would have been the only thing that I could have asked for but it was time to get a truck and I couldn't pass up the deal I got on this.

That's a beauty. Really like the color matched cap.

Yes in fact I did... Had a first gen regular cab, after selling it went to a 2nd gen.... I love the regular cab because it doesn't allow me to keep junk and it's quick to clean the interior. Plus when your with a group of friends you never have to drive.

My first Tacoma was a 2nd gen double cab and it was too big. It got 13 MPG in town and driving it felt like navigating a submarine. You'll be fine with a single cab. You already have a large passenger car. Lots of people on this forum think you need $25K in aftermarket gear, military-grade run flat tires and an assault rifle with built-in satellite phone or you'll be raped and killed by mutant desert pirates the second you leave your planned residential community.

From the outside it looks like there's no room in a regular cab. I am 6' tall and with the seat most of the way back I still have more storage space than I need:
    IMG_0010 (1).jpg IMG_0192.jpg

That doesn't show all the stuff that easily fits under the seat with room to spare; tool kit, multimeter, code reader, receiver shackle, tape measure, thick CD-R booklet, dog leash, poo bags, roll of TP, etc. There is still plenty of room on the passenger seat for my 45 lb. dog, not to mention the 6' by 4 1/2' open box out back that most people use for transporting a pocket of air. I take it you are shopping for a newer single cab, which will have even more storage than mine.

They are also highly maneuverable in an off-road or urban setting, they get good MPG and the 2.7L I4 is very durable.

I've had my 2013 for two years now. I've had super crew and supercab f150s so the lack of cab space was a concern. Mine is a 5 speed so it does have a bench seat. There is a much larger space behind the seat then most realize. I keep quite a bit of gear back there with some planned organization. After a few convenience mods such as seat cover, intermittent wipers and fog lights, it is now just about perfect for me. I would not sell this thing for any amount of money. There is something just so right about rowing this through the gears. It won't get there fast, but it will get there. My dog rides with me many times now and she seems to have as much fun as me. If you don't carry a lot of people, I'd say go for it and don't delay if the truck is what you want. I don't think they last long on the market anymore. Best of luck.image.jpg

Have a '14 4wd RC Auto, bought it new 12/14. Has 24k now and really like it. Here's some take always:

    1. Don't expect speed. The truck is perfectly happy up to and around 60mph. Overdrive is very tall (0.71) so on the interstate, it doesn't maintain speed well unless you're willing to turn 3k+rpm in 3rd or run 85+mph to get the RPMs up in OD. I'm running 255/75r17 BFG MTs on FJC alloys which doesn't help. 4.88s are the solution.

    2. Don't expect stellar mileage. I've averaged 19.x mpg over the life of the truck. Good thing is that it doesn't seem to change much if I baby it or give it hell. So I give it hell mostly.

    3. If you ever think you need more room, get it now. I somewhat regret not getting a 2.7 4wd access cab at times just to have a place to lay a gun or tools or whatever. I do think you and the pooch will be happy though, I put a baby in mine nearly everyday.

    4. They are fun to drive, reminds me of the XJ Cherokees. Just a really nice combo of size and maneuverability.

If your used to driving a motorcycle most places and don't need to haul around half of your possessions all the time a regular cab works good. You can put a toolbox on the bed to keep some junk in of behind the seat isn't enough room.

I've been watching a few (CPO) for sale at dealerships online - possibly coming off leases. They don't last long before they're snatched up.
Here's another question: Does anything go wrong with these things?
CPO from Toyota dealers seem to cost $1-2K more than from other dealers (presumably trade-ins). If purchased from a non-Toyota dealer it won't be certified and an extended FACTORY warranty won't be available. I've been jerked around by a third party warranty in the past so I'm not considering that but I need to buy in as cheaply as possible at this stage, even if it's only $1 or 2K difference.
When I bought both CPO Xterras I bought the extended warranty and it saved me many times. Banking on the "Toyota" name and reputation can only go so far. Being the simplest" and most under-stressed Toyota truck available gives me a good feeling to a point. I don't want to go in unprepared.
How's ownership reliability going for you?

My cd player stopped working after 100k miles but the radio still worked. my console door lid button broke and I fixed it for about 25 cents also happened around 100k. The clutch squeeks if the temps are below 45. My truck has 130k miles and is 10 years old. I've done mild offroading, hauled lots of stuff, drove it on road trips and it's never let me down. I'd buy another in a heartbeat. If you buy one just make sure you keep it waxed regularly and if it rains much where your at get one with wiper delay or install it after you buy it.

I have had this truck for awhile. No problems. I drive it hard. It does my pulling duties for my small ranch. I have no complaints at all.

It's hard to find used reg cabs for sale because nobody ever gets rid of them.

i bought a used 2013 last summer. so im coming up on 1 year of ownership.
i only use it for weekend trips, so im adding miles at a pretty slow rate. but its been rock solid, especially during the winter. installing the intermittent wiper switch was a HUGE quality of life upgrade.

My gas door broke on my 2013 when the truck was two years old. But other than that, it has been great. I picked mine up from a non Toyota dealer and it still had the factory 3/36 warranty. I'm at 50k now and has been out of warranty for over a year and I have no worries about reliability. It really is a low tech vehicle and is very easy to work on. They can be worked pretty decently and will tow a pop up with ease. Mine pulls a 2000 plus pound popup with no issues. The RC is great with stock sized tires, even the 265/70R16s over the base 245s is a good match for the trucks weight and power. But if you are thinking about doing a lift and larger diameter tires, the 4 cyl will turn out to be underwhelming.

Which year(s)/ gen(s) are you looking at?

I wouldn't trade my '03 for the world. Gotta love these trucks.
Mine is an SR5 but does not have power windows or door locks.

    Good luck with your purchase.
