My 2.7 runs great no miss fires, idles perfect good power. I started hearing and rattle or almost knocking sound under the hood, sounded like a bolt in the valve cover but there's not I checked lol. I took all the belts off and started the truck to eliminate any of those items, still hear it. The throw out bearing was making noise so I changed that and the pilot bearing as well. Also while I had the valve cover off I checked to make sure the timing chain was tight as I thought it could have been chain slap that I was hearing. Im at the point now where I need a new direction to look any help would be appreciated guys.

to isolate engine nosies you need a good ear. the noise is rhythmic so is it a crankshaft speed or camshaft speed. Everything in the head runs at 1/2 crank speed.

I had what sounded like a cat meowing under the hood one AM on one of my Fords… sure enough, there was a kitten sitting on the air filter housing.

Its kind of difficult to locate the knocking sound because of the noise conducting through the steel.
You can try this by touching the engine with a wooden dowel to your ear.
    1. louder at the front vs the back?
    2. louder at the top vs the bottom?
    3. louder on the passenger side vs the driver's side?

Is it louder when the engine is cold vs warmed up?

It is common enough for the balance shaft bearing to starve for lubrication and this will cause a knock.

I faced something somewhat similar— it ended being missing bolts that hold the egr pipe tube in place.

The sound is intermittent, which is making it tough to pinpoint. Sometimes its louder than other times and sometimes its not there at all. Im pulling the starter tonight to make sure the spring return isn't broke and letting the starter gear bounce off the flywheel while its running

You have to use a stethoscope to narrow it down as in is it sound on driver or passenger side front or back

Does it do it with the AC OFF? I know it sounds ridiculous but I was trying to pinpoint a knocking sound on my Camry that would only happen under load at certain intervals. Had my wife power brake it while listening with a long screwdriver and found that the ac compressor was knocking when engaged and only under certain loads. Sounded to me more like a VVT issue until I pinpointed it. Point is engine noises can be weird and difficult to find and end up not being the engine at all. Something else that's helped me is listen from all different angles even the most unlikely like kneeling down in front of the radiator.

I have had a similar issue, I would start my truck up and it would sound like the chain was slapping took it to Toyota and they found the cam gear seal was worn causing the oil pressure to build up slower than normal in the cam gears

Did you change the clutch while you had it all apart?
Curious as to how long that job took.
Thanks & good luck tracking down that noise.
