I have a 1998 Tacoma with the 2.7. Has an intermittent rattle/chatter under the hood. Typically at idle. But goes away when rpm’s raise and not all the time. Could this be the timing chain? The truck has 105k miles, head gasket was done 4500 miles ago and they didn’t say anything about the chain but now having a rattling sounds from the engine. Should I be concerned? Video is linked.

possibly the tensioner is going out and causing the chain to make a noise?

    Could be alot of things....
.....if the timing chain is going out you should be able to run live stream with even a cheap scanner..
IF the timing advance is all over the place at idle .....and then it 'smooths' out at higher rpm...
If your going thru all that to replace adjuster, u do whole chain too....

Alot of things going on there.....if the belts were too tight, or just plain age....
bad harmonic balancer, several pulleys there, compressor, steering pump.....
BAD HB would smooth out with speed.......or fly apart......

    Could be water pump damaged.....
Could be the bearings on the balance shafts......yikes...

Kinda sounds like an exhaust leak. Check your exhaust manifold, it is cast iron and they crack pretty easy. look in the valley between 2 and 3 you will see a big crack

I will look into all of that. I just picked up the truck. Between 99-104k, it had a new head gasket, chain “checked”, water pump, alternator, harmonic balancer, belts, and power steering pump. Guess any of those could of just failed? Or my fear of the timing chain but just seems really early to fail and unlikely with just being checked but obviously not impossible. Just wanted to see if others had the same sound/issue

These oem time chains last 300~400K .....as long as u change oil.....
so dought seriously its the chain or adjuster, unless something was put back together wrong...

Other than the head gasket thing,.......mine came with leaky head gasket....these are pretty solid engines....
    so change fluids....often....

Now you got me paranoid too.....I go out and start mine.....hear alot of newness startup sounds....
sounds like near my ac compressor......

THese 4 bangers are noisy....lobs hitting valve bucket shims......if they dont burn oil, most owners are happy......

So I have a 99 2.7 that sounds the same. I’ve been told by 2 mechanics that more than likely what the noise is is actually the spring loaded camshaft. One cam is spring loaded and they said that if you take it apart and don’t keep a screw in it to keep it loaded it will be noisy like that. My trucks been like that since I bought it 3 years ago. Anyway I just found out about this recently, just did a head gasket on a 1997 2.7 and kept the cam loaded and it started up and sounds normal. But I’d say that or timing chain but listening to your video sounds like my truck. Hope ya get it
