09 2.7 acces base 2wd auto 207k : Mechanic said sparkplugs and coilpacks are needed. Anyone with a 2.7 Taco using aftermarket ignition coilpacks that work fine no issue if, so what make/brand are they & how many miles using them ? Or are they a timebomb for my rig & go oem BIG$$$$ ?

I replaced mine with Denso 6731308. If you want aftermarket, RIPP makes some but I don’t have any personal experience running them, I just know they’re out there. However there are a few SC’d v6 guys running them, and the OE coils are the same between the i4 and the v6.

For a naturally aspirated setup, I’d just run the Densos so you know 100% what you’re getting

I ran the stock Denso’s for 272k miles and then put some new ones in and I’ve run those 13k so far. No issues with the new or old ones ever, but I saw one fail on an FJC at about 285k so I did mine as preventative maintenance. I didn’t notice any difference in performance, ran just like it did before after replacing them.

When you have them replaced, I’d be asking for the old ones back. They’d be good to keep as spares. Was the truck having a misfire when you took it in, or why is the mechanic suggesting they need to be replaced?

ITS been hesitant rite after a cold start for a minute or so then idles normal...then today I got a check engine code: missfire cyl 1& 2 random missfire. The young man at Oreily pulled the code and said plugs and coils most likely. I dont really trust auto part guys expertise i just wanted a code pulled. Anyhow i called my mechanic and he said the exact same thing. My oem sparkys have 70k so i may change them out also.

You might try swapping coil packs between cylinders 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 and then pull the codes and agin and see if the codes follow to those cylinders. That would tell you for sure it’s coil pack related
