I got this truck specifically because it was one of the only newer engines left that DIDN'T have direct injection. I had a 2007 VW GTI with DI, and due to the lack of fuel (+detergents) flowing across the intake valves, oil vapors from the PCV would "bake" on and cause a buildup of carbon. Many started seeing misfires at 30,000 miles or so because of this. The only way to fix it was by taking the intake manifold off and scraping the valve stems with a dentist's pick and carburetor cleaner . . . a 6-8 hour job. Even catch-cans proved to work only minimally, and mainly worked to prolong the time you'd begin to see misfires to about 50,000 - 70,000 miles.

I don't know if VW or other manufacturers fixed this issue with their DI designs. I have seen some hybrid engines using both multiport FI and DI, maybe that's the key.
