Just bought a 2WD 19' DCSB 2.7. it's a little sluggish, not completely disappointed but wouldn't mind a little more pep. I am running 265/70/17 (31.6"). I may go slightly larger but no bigger than a 32. I mostly drive city with an occasional hwy bought. Looking for more power without screaming the engine at 75mph. What gear ratio would y'all recommend and what should it cost to regear a 2wd. Or would an engine mod like header or cold air intake be better. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for the info.

Realistically gears would be better than an intake/headers. Modern engines are pretty well optimized. Intake an headers won’t make enough of a difference in my opinion. I’m not sure what the stock gear ratio is for the 4cyl.

Good time to sell right now, much harder to find a 4.0 or even a 3.5 v6 to buy. With Toyota, more displacement usually beats aftermarket power adders or gears unless you add a turbo or supercharger.

If you are really after power, selling and buying a V8 or a turbo 6 1/2 tone from some other manufacturer is the way to go.

None of these are going to make the truck more enjoyable to drive even the v6 sucks balls in the power band . If you really want power supercharger or turbo would be your best bet .

Seriously- none of the Taco engines will win any drag races; patience is rewarded, resistance futile. So just enjoy driving it and when it wears out, you can buy another.

Thank for all the input. I have been reading threads about gears but they are all talking about putting 33"-35" tires. If I want to stay with a 31.5-32" what gear ratio would be best and what can I expect to pay. TY

FWIW. A gear change won't give you more power. It will raise the engine revs. This will allow the engine to reach it's power band at lower road speeds. The cost will be higher fuel consumption.

So, the next complaint is likely to be "My fuel mileage sucks. What can I do to improve it?"

You already have a CAI, just like every other Tacoma.

Look up or figure out your current gear ratio, factor in OE tires for an 'effective' gear ratio.

Then pick another available gear, factor in a 32" tire and see what happens. Experiment till you get what you want.

Along the way the tire calculator may help

I run 265/70/17s on my 2.7 (manual,4wd). I believe it's geared 4.10. No problem running 70+ on the slab. That little 4 banger doesn't mind being revved. Learn to keep it in it's happy zone, and all is well. The $$ spent to raise performance to noticeable levels would be better spent on a down payment for a horse with more ass. JMO :D

Thank you everyone for the input. I certainly am not going to sell. Love the truck. Coming from a V8 I just have to learn how to keep it in it's happy zone lol.

    You meant alloy, correct?

15" 6 lug wheels could be tough to find and may not clear the calipers.
