The reality is the stick is wrong, or the spec is wrong, or both are wrong. Since Toyota has never clarified it they probably think it doesn’t matter. But if the spec says 6.1 and the factory fill is 6.1 but the stick is 5.5 (or whatever since it can’t be read easily) then 2 points out of 3 say 6.1.

I don't get it. Why does the owners manual, alldata etc call for 6.1 qts and mine really takes 5.5 or less. If I were to put in 6.1 it would be way over filled. Toyota doesn't know how much oil their 2.7 takes ? Don't make no sense.:(

IMVHO the 6.1 figure is for a dry fill. Most DOHC engines retain large amounts of oil in the heads around the valvetrain. If your 2.7L does not use or leak oil just put in 5.5 quarts and save some natural resources for the next generation.
Even 5.5 qts will register above the full line on my stick. In the end do what you want, it is a free country for a bit longer.

Thanks for the reply "retain large amounts of oil in the heads around the valvetrain" is the answer. I got to make a note to myself - 5.5 - I'm using synthetic and don't remember 6 months down the road - look it up in the owners manual (6.1) and get it wrong again - Dah :(

I had trouble with the same thing ..the manual said 6.1 qts but I compared that to what came out of the engine and it was a little above 5 qts then what ever the oil filter gave...I threw in 5 qts (the jug) and the dipstick reads a tad below the full line...just need to use some reasoning

not sure why alot of people are filling the filter but w/e. What the manual say is for a dry engine no oil at all in it. Like some people have said oil hides in alot of places in engines. Be careful of overfilling, as there is a small chance that you can hydro lock your engine although unlikely. Me personally when I change the oil I run the truck for a few mins, drain, change the filter, fill until it's at the full mark of the dipstick, run check for leaks and shut it down. then before I go anywhere I take a second to check the oil after it has settled back into the pan. It usually reads just a hair below full as the filter does hold a little bit of oil.

Until someone clarifies whether the stick is too long or not, then this shit will just keep going on and on with nothing but opinion. Half a quart low, if the stick is indeed too long making 6.1 fill way above full mark, is not gonna hurt anything so until there is more than conjecture and supposition about this I will be going with oem filter and 5.5 quart fills.

Anywhere between the marks or even a little over full mark is fine -- the "safe" range leaves a lot of cushion on either end. Like the last few entries, my personal experience is 5.5qt with a new filter is just about perfect. If it's a high-end filter I'll leave it on for one extra cycle and then I add 5qt even. (I have some cheap but strong rare earth magnets on the filter canister to help catch some stuff before the filter media.)
