Great to hear this and thanks for reporting back that it fixed your issue. Good real world data point.

Still having some issues, going to reset the ECU and go from there. I'll bring my new coil and spare dizzy with me, the used offbrand one is in it now.

I have the same problem that killed my engine at 242k got a new engine installed and same problem with the stutter. Changed the distributor fixed MOST of my problems. Only stumbled randomly now 10-15 times in 300 miles on new engine. Changed with new distributor cap and rotor plugs wires new injections just tried the igniter and same problem.

My guess would be fuel lines or fuel tank considering you swapped out the engine and have same issue.

Mine does it between 1750 and 2100. I have replaced everything under the sun with the exception of the fuel pressure regulator. The only other explanation I can come up with (in my case) is my catalyst has been punched from my converter. I may have a exhaust scavenge issue at that rpm and or the exhaust is going past the O2 too fast to correctly monitor on account of it . Please keep us posted

The distributor fixed the stutter that was always there now I’m hoping it’s just lack of fuel under pressure for the random stutter

Did you replace the distributor with a Denso/Toyota unit? Aftermarket electrical parts can cause problems like this. Work well most of the time, but not work 100% like they're supposed to.

Spectra and Denso are different. Does it say Denso on it with a Denso part number?

You could try to find a used Denso distributor for cheaper or a used original Denso coil. The same coil was used on different models. I don't what to push you in this direction unless you are at a dead end trying to figure it out. Check the fuel related stuff, fuel pump and pressure regulator first.

It depends what your trims look like. If they are high it’s either a fuel delivery issue or unmetered air. As far as the axle seal goes, replace the bearing or you will be changing the seal again in a month. Did mine last week, both sides. You can get a kit from Marlin Crawler for 70 bucks per side; everything you need. Plus free stickahs!!!

Search fuel trims on this forum. I’m sure you will learn a lot.

So I'm not 100% sure on this. It's been a while and I'm spitting off the top of my head. But I believe in the 95 and 96s there is a sensor integrated into the distributor. Cam position sensor maybe? So for some maybe when they are replacing their distributors they are really replacing the sensor and that's what's actually providing more of the fix.

Do some research to check me in the cam position sensor thing but I always remember that being the case on my 96 at least. But if you are looking for a used OEM distributor made by DENSO. the coil should be a yellowish clear color with the words DENSO or TOYOTA written across it.

96 4-cylinder definitely had the cam sensor in the distributor. When they switched to coil packs they put the cam sensor on the intake side of the head between 2 & 3 cylinders. I don't think there was ever a version with a distributor with a separate cam sensor mounted on the head.

Denso coil was used in many models, but the whole distributor was specific to the Tacoma.

You might be able to check the air gap for the pickup coil for the cam position sensor inside the distributor. I'm not sure what the spec is or if it's adjustable.

I went through it all with this problem. I got an oriellys distributor (spectra premium) and it fixed all problems for a day and it all started happening again $300 for that one and tried other things and finally took it to Toyota and they said I need a distributor from them even though I just changed the whole unit. When through with it because they guaranteed that if it wasn’t it that would not charge me and keep searching. $800 to have them do it and it fixed all of my problems. You need to buy a denso distributor that’s what they installed and works great !!!!! 2000k in on the second distributor and it’s ripping healthy. That year doesn’t like aftermarket parts just ran faulty with the oriellys junk
