4banger was acceptable in the smaller and lighter 1st gen. Since then it’s not. Unless you’re Orkin

Your 97 had a 3rz and I'm pretty sure your 4r was the 22re. Current trucks come with the 2tr

    Easier to fit a turbo.

When I lived in CO my truck was slow and I'd be at redline going up Floyd hill. If you stay stock you'll be fine. Start adding weight and bigger tires you will definitely want to regear. If you find you want the extra power later on add a turbo and then elevation won't matter much. Sounds like you like to tinker so that'll be a fun project.

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
Some drive by with sympathy, some drive by with hate but they do drive by. It’s like watching a Rolodex of ugly people all day (and I mean ALL Day) the first time a 95 year old grey haired lady drove by and all I saw was a fluff of gray hair that I thought was a steering wheel cover then a bird flip up at me cracked me up. OP, get a base 2wd and some tires for the back

One thing it took me a while to realize is that folks on TW saying a 3rd gen 4 cylinder would be too underpowered typically were driving V6 4x4 DC Tacomas weighing 300-400+ lbs heavier than my 2019 SR Access cab utility package 2WD.
I traded in a 2007 Colorado 4 door I4 for my Tacoma, and though specs tend to show both were equally slow 0-60, my Tacoma definitely would beat it on acceleration. Punching the gas pedal on the Colorado at 35 mph there would be a big roar and little immediate action, I told folks the gas pedal was just a volume control lol. The Tacoma is much more responsive and the only thing I’ve noticed is more downshifting at highway speeds on hills with the 6 speed auto in the Tacoma, whereas the Colorado was a 4 speed automatic. Not a problem, the truck runs the rpms where it needs to. My Tacoma also gets about 4 more mpg than that Colorado did.

If you’re pulling 400 more pounds than my Tacoma due to curb weight then you would want the V6, but I’m happy with my 2.7L and it’s proven reliability and adequate performance at less than 4000 lbs curb weight and 1500 lbs (door sticker) payload capacity.

Yes that makes sense. Thats exactly what i was reffering to, a DC 4wd 4 cyl.

Still, i would love to drive the 4 cyl one day, very curious how it performs. Some folks stated thats its not a big difference from a v6, which is hard to believe. V6 has like 90 more hp. They are both high revving engines as well.

Well I’m with you on overall performance, specs for 0-60 I’ve seen the V6 beats the I4 every time. Yet I have no problem merging on the interstate even with a 400 lb load. It would be interesting to see a real world 4000 lb I4 vs a 4450 lb V6 race though. The V6 is gonna win but by how much? :D

Yeah, we had a tundra for work and it was a thirsty bitch. 14 mpg on a good day, good power though. The GX 570 is even worse, like 12 maybe. Toyota trucks and SUVs were never good gas but paid off in reliability department.

    This ^^^^^
I've had two Tacos, both 4wd Access Cabs bought new. One was the I4, the other had the V-6. Both were doggy and inefficient given their small engines. The obsolete auto transmissions don't help either.

Both had no significant issues but the MPGs weren't much better (and sometimes worse) than the F-150 with small V-8 that I sold.

Was more interested in reliability and wasn't towing anymore.

After living with a hybrid RAV 4 for awhile, would seriously consider a hybrid Tundra if Toyota decides to go in that direction...

    I drive a 18 3.5 v6 dcsb Tacoma 6mt, the wife drives a 2010 4 cylinder 5mt aclb Tacoma. Both trucks are running 31 inch, at p rated tires.
Most the time i can get the same or better mpg than her 4 cylinder.
As much as I like the 4 cylinder, i wouldn't buy a new one unless it has a turbo.
