Planning to keep this taco for the long run, has anyone swapped out the 2.7 to the 3.5, what parts can be kept and which ones need to be removed

Both are great motors. I suspect the 2.7 would outlive the 3.5. Why switch it?

I know this isn't what you asked, but it would almost certainly be more cost effective to sell the 2.7 and buy a 3.5. Doing an engine swap on a modern vehicle with so many computer modules and whatnot is an endeavor in insanity, although swapping to an engine that's already used by the same model is certainly loads easier. If longevity is your only goal, you have come to the right place. Both the 2.7 and 3.5 motors are excellent. The 2.7 is going to be cheaper to maintain in the long run though.

I'm not sure which parts are fully interchangeable, but many are, and your best bet is going to be to find a salvage 3.5 Tacoma as a parts truck. That way you know you have everything you're gonna need, and if something is unservicable from the parts truck, you can get a new replacement. After countless hours of work you can resell the parts truck to get some money back, but even then it would probably still cost more than if you had sold the 2.7 and bought a 3.5.

If you are going to swap in a 3.5, you might as well do a LS. LOL! Sell it and buy a 3.5 if you want one.

    If I was going to cut up/swap the 2.7 - I'd go 4.7 before 3.5.

Buyers remorse...ehh? I had 4 cylinder toyota 4x4 pickups before they put a 6 in them. Never missed the 4 banger again. One thing you have in your favor is a proven engine that can likely take more abuse than the 3.5 ever will. That said, your best off to leave that way.

People complain about the 3.5 not having enough gusto. Imagine doing all that work and being disappointed.

Just sell it and buy the v6 version.

There's no way you'll save a penny doing a swap.

If u wanna keep the truck forever keep the i4.

Poor Toyota. It just wants to feel loved.

I grew up riding in my dad's 97 4cyl. That truck took everything he threw at it and the engine outlived the body at 398k miles. Ran hard and I am not overstating. Used abused and beat down some more. Still started and asked for more the day he scrapped it. And guess what he replaced it with? 2022 2.7

2.7 will last longer. You won't have to spend a dime if you just leave it as it is.

Well, with an engine swap you only get 119 extra horsepower and it would probably cost significantly more in both time and money
