Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
You can make it happen, all depends on how mechanically inclined you are or how much money you wanna spend having someone do it for you. First gens were the last generation Toyota truck where simplicity was still a reality, and doing swaps like this could be had for fairly inexpensively and easily. You may need to swap the ECU for the V6 engine in place of the ECU for the 4 cyl. Other than that, it should be cosmetic things like different motor mounts, radiator, and such.

Good luck, and post pics if you decide to go for it!

I always was curious-if the VIN# says it's a 4, how do you pass smog on visual?

You will run into several main problems. The inline 4 cylinder sits further forward on the frame than the v6 does. You will have to cut off your frame mounts and move them back.

Assuming you are coupling that back up with your same automatic transmission and your 4x4 capability, you will also need a compatible ecu that will work with a 2004 4x4 5vz-fe motor with the a340(?) transmission. You will most likely need a different bell housing for your transmission because you're bolting it up to a completely different block. I would highly suggest getting an ecu that is from a 2004 Tacoma V6 auto that way you can be sure it is compatible with the rest of your body loom.

Regardless, it isn't as simple as it may sound. As bad as you may want a regular cab v6, unless you have access to lots of tools and machinery and a whole other means for transpiration, I would suggest against it.

Myself I think if your asking you need to do lots more research.

There are always little problems we all forget so simple but a royal pain.

    Like the exhaust

Just guessing here are the ECM plugs even the same between the 4 and V6 even so the 4th plug will have to be repinned at the least

If your just looking for more power just add a turbo to the 2.7. The 2rz/3rz are very boost friendly engines and it would be simpler and possibly cheaper than the swap

    02,03 some 04, it's complicated

These guys have good info. Like Tim said I've done it with a 4x4 conversion. Yes tranny mount and motor mounts need to get relocated.since your an 04 stay with the 03-04 models only because of the throttle body is ran by the ECU and one cable. Your best bet is find a donor truck and get all parts needed for the swap. Check out my build for everything I've done. I'm working and I don't have enough time to give you more details. I'll try and come back on after work. Peace!

Edit: you might not need to relocate the tranny mounts. I had to because of the 4x4 conversion.

Also some states won't let you go with older model motors. It might have to be same year or newer. That's what I had to do. Also the with ECU make sure if your a Cali truck you'll need a Cali ECU. If your not in Cali then get a non Cali ECU. That will save you with the smog headaches.

There is also different size spacers between the fly wheel and motor. the 2.7 and 3.4 have different thickness spacers.

The reason why you need a different bell housing from the motor to the tranny is because the starter is on the passenger side on the 3.4 not like the 2.7.

You'll also need to add a fuel filter because of the 2.7 is under the intake and the 3.4 is under the cab. My build shows how I added one.

You'll also need a fan shroud because of the location where the fan sits

    New power steering lines also.

As you can see the list goes on. Don't get discouraged it can be done. My taco is my DD and I made it work. It takes work.
