here is a hp/tq curve of an Audi. Look at the torque curve. This would be great in a truck. 34AD1919-5B56-490C-AFAD-E5EBE8657D7A.jpg

I was gonna throw out there that my Gti made peak torque @1700 all the way to 4600 RPM. It would be amazing in a Taco of any generation to make power that quick and flat.

They flat move. 0-60 low 5 sec, 40 mpg on the highway. I would love a powertrain like that in my Tacoma.

Older turbo engines were generally normally asperated engines with an off the shelf turbocharger piped in with less than ideal plumbing arrangements due to space and placement constraints. Turbo lag and other undesirable operating characteristics were common.
Current turbocharged engine packages perform much better with virtually no turbo lag and a very broad torque curve due to engineering advancements such as optimally sized turbochargers, twin scroll turbines, shorter exhaust distances, generous intercoolers, specific more robust engines, etc.

Very impressive for sure. It would be perfect for a truck like ours.

You have the right idea but it's not rpm that creates the exhaust gas it's engine load. You hit a hill in 6th gear at 2k rpm the load on the engine will be high so it will have a lot of exhaust flow and will be able to spin the turbo to make boost.

Rev the engine to 6k in neutral there's hardly any load so not much exhaust flow to spin the turbo.

That 1600 hp supra will make boost sitting on a trans brake at 2200 rpm. It's the same reason for a roll race people will brake boost. If all it took were rpm there'd be no reason to brake boost.

Is there anyone on this forum with a turbocharged (or supercharged) 3rd gen 2.7? @BassAckwards has a 2nd gen.

There is no doubt load is critical. But it is not the whole story. And of course the supra will begin to make boost with a trans brake, but not full boost at 2200 rpm. not even close. Look at any high hp supra power curve and you will see they don't even begin to make power boost below 3500rpm, because it's the combination of load and exhaust gas flow that builds boost. I think we will go around in circles here. I am saying you need load and revs to produce high flow exhaust gases and your saying you just need load. A small engine needs to work harder to push more exhaust to run a turbo. A big engine doesn't need to work as hard to build boost on the same turbo. So all these small turbo engines have very small turbos to build boost at low rpms.

I was against the idea of a tacoma with a 4 cylinder turbo engine, but if it’s proven motor that’s been in Lexus cars is consider it

The 2.7 gives me a lot of confidence but man it's gutless in high elevation if you deal with that regularly.

I’d only have one there if it were boosted but living near sea level is fine. I’ve had other trucks with more powerful motors and they all lost some power but the I4 just doesn’t have any to spare.

Get a 2nd gen taco or 1st gen tundra with a 4.0... test drove a 2.7 3rd gen and felt less low end than my 3.4 1st gen, albeit I think the 2.7 was more drivable

The 1st gen tundra is negligibly larger than a 2/3rd gen

I've driven my 2.7L to 12,000 ft, and seemed to have adequate powah.

How fast could you go and up what? Depends on the % grade. Questa (~1500’) at 7% can’t hold 4th at all while Waldo (under 1000’) at 6% is no problem in 4th. Vail pass is 7% and over 10,000. Donner is 8000’ and 6%. In the lower gears off the highway it's not an issue.

Around or up? I think going up Pike’s Peak would be a real drag.
