They make it shift softly to keep the majority of buyers quiet but ya, a shift kit is the way to go in my experience

I have a 2004 4X4 RC with the 2.7. Yep, it's gutless and you have to rev the shit out of it to get up a 7% grade which I am surrounded with but they last forever. The 2.7 needs a manual. I couldn't imagine driving one with an auto. The 2.7 is an industrial engine. They were engineered to rev at 4000+ rpm all day long which is why they last so long as a DD. Fuel mileage wasn't a concern when they engineered them and I could care less about it. Mine averages right around 19 mpg.

I’ve been eyeballing that kit on eBay, what’s your take on it?

    17-18 mpg with 33s and a lift.

Has okay power for what it is - a reliable turbo would be nice, but I dont want motor or tranny issues at 100k miles

In 10 years the windows will still roll down, the ac will still blow cold, the seats wont be ripped up, the chain drive will be intact, and the water pump will still be fine

At 200k miles it wont be a pile of shit like chrysler and ford

I heavy fucks with the 2.7 (that means I like it a lot)

It’s a truck, I’m not trying to drive like an asshole passing people left and right. 2.7 is perfect for me.

I do agree that above 65mph it struggles to keep steady gear with the new tranny and you have to put it in S5 and drive below 78mph - the only negative.

I compared my 2013 Taco to my wife's 2010 Rav4 , because that is what is sitting in my driveway. I do realize thr Rav4 is appx. 175lb liter than the Taco & the Rav4's 3.5 eng has appx. 100 more HP than the 2.7, & I never thought the Taco should do as good as the Rav4, I just didn't realize it would be as much of a difference as there is. When I got the 2013, I had been driving a "98" Taco Reg. cab 4X4 with a 2.4 4 cyl & 5 spd manual trans. for appx. 10 yrs. & I never complained about the power it had, I may have assumed, when I traded for the the larger 2.7 & the 15 yr. newer technology would have compensated for the auto. trans. That being said, forget I compared my 2013 Taco to the wife's 2010 Rav4. Compared to my old "98" Taco 2.4 5 spd. this 2013 2.7 auto. is a slug, I can live with it, but I'll never enjoy it like I did my old one.

Holy smokes, the 3.5 V6 is having issues with con rods, rings and bearings at only 60-70k miles? That is serious! I wonder why we haven't heard more about this. I might start lurking in the 3rd gen forums just out of curiosity.

I wish you hadn't mentioned the 3.5 V6 problems, I wasn't aware of them. The wife's Rav4 3.5 has reached 80K, I've been hoping for 200K to 250K before having problems, now I'll be constantly nervous, listening & watching for problems.

The shifter is really nice I love it, it is louder than stock you can hear the transmission a lot more
