Little background about my situation, currently own a 15 2.7 5 speed manual 4x4 with 169,000 miles. Truck is fine and would drive it anywhere. Problem is I’m recovering from shoulder surgery now and will need knee surgery in the future. Wanting to stay with the 2.7, was wanting to hear some real world experience about the 6 speed auto. Have no desire to get a 2024 with the new fangled 2.4 turbo.
    Thanks

Currently have 12k miles on a 2022 SR5 DCSB 2.7L 6 speed auto 2WD.. I have a few accessories like Rock sliders and trailer hitch installed.. mpg vary depending on use.. slow city 40mph less 15.6 - 16.8 mpg..faster city 45mph-55mph 18mpg.. just driving normally not slow but not in a rush either.. faster speeds 60mph - 70mph range 20mpg -23 mpg..auto transmission seems to find 2k rpm no matter what speed range I'm going.. yes at times there is lag noticeably if you step on it.. and often times hitting 4k rpms until you are up to speed.. overall people say the 2.7L is so slow..but I hardly notice it as I'm not driving it like a sports car nor I'm I left at the light..mostly stay in the 50% of traffic off the light etc..there is a button on the dash that changes shift points that makes a big difference, like you want to get on a 70mph highway or something..just hit the button..need to jump into traffic etc.. I'm sure it kills your fuel economy most likely.. I rarely use it..while others can only drive with it on..

Can’t count on one hand the number of tacomas I’ve had with the 2.7. Reason is they just work, simple to work on, and I just like em. I’ve found a few 2022-2023 with low miles within a couple hundred miles just need to go drive one.

I have a 2.7L with the 5 speed manual, but I believe the 6 speed automatic will return even better fuel economy than the manual. It was stated that with the automatic RPMs stay close to 2,000 - probably a very efficient area for the 2.7L.

I hear ya re: new fangled technology (I'm not new) - seems like V6s are being retired for turbo 4s. Subaru did it with their (flat) 6. I wonder if turbos will reach 200k+ miles without major overhauls/repairs. Maybe they will based on Toyota's reputation.

Yea just need to make time to go, trying to sell mine then go buy one. Nobody seems to understand the Toyota tax is real. Lowball offers are wearing me out. Not giving it away !

As long as you can turn the wheel with your right arm, you can shift with your left.

The knee surgery thing is a bit more tricky.

Ha yea truck set for first 6 weeks while I had a sling on, then couldn’t shift gears to save my life for 2 more weeks. Driving everywhere now fine. Can see the writing on the wall, time to give up the manual. Wife hates it anyways.

Yea being in Ky has its perks, but selling and finding Tacoma’s isn’t one of them

Not much better with the 5 speed manual. I'm just used to it I guess. The advantage is fuel economy. The worse I've seen, which is in the winter is in the upper 18mpg area.

i would never buy the 2.7 auto again unless it had a OTT tune and LCE headers on it. Those two mods completely take the truck to undrivable to tolerable. I live in an area where highway is hilly, so the trans would go crazy gearhunting. Would be fine in a flat area. I get 23mpg regularly even with 33 ko2's.

I have the 2.7L rwd with 31" heavy E load tires and a lift. The truck is slow but it's no worse than stock form, the gearing people complain about isn't bad - it's like my truck learned my driving habits, feels fine around town but on the freeway it does gear hunt, I don't use cruise control. Thinking about an ott tune

I would highly suggest the ott tune, I would have sold my 2.7 if I didnt have it.
people sell their 2.7 auto just because of the gear hunting, it really is that bad. The v6 is gear hunting just as much too but more tolerable with the extra torque.

That's the thing about an automatic - the gear hunting on hills. That's where it's nice having a manual.

That is excellent mpgs, and where the advantage of the automatic does show. Better efficiency than my manual.

It hasn't bothered me that much but I also don't go on the freeway very often, I think ima do the ott anyway
