A nice middle ground is 295/70r17. Measures in at 33.5" tall and JUST clears the fenders. I still had to do a good bit of cutting and hammering of my pinch weld and firewall, but only had to trim the lower corner of the fender.

Thats a thought. I would still need a re-gear, but it would cut down the weight I am thinking.

    Great truck BTW!

    BUMP!!!!!!!!

Too late to revive this thread? Is anyone still out there? I’m looking to re-gear my 4cyl ASAP! Would be nice to finally run 35’s this winter... why did it take until page 6 for someone to even mention 5.29??? Got no feedback, I saw nothing but love for that ratio on a separate thread, doesn’t look like a stock item at @ECGS but that is my question. 4.88 vs 5.29. I’m sick of driving a dog I want some torque. As long as I can hit 85 under 4,000 RPM I want lower gears. Anyone???

    Dude I drive a 4cyl on 33’s w/ 4.88 and can barely hit 85 period. I need a downhill and tailwind.

I have 33's 5.29. with a lot of weight on truck and can hit 80 no problem. Also can use cruise control up hill at about 45mph. will keep 70 up to a 30 degree incline usually

I can hit 85 all day, in 4th gear... 5th gear is useless that’s why I’m here.

I’ve had a 2.7 truck and a 4runner. Both with 5.29s and 33s. Done multiple 1500 mile + road trips on them, and have had no problems. I’ve also run 4.88s with the 2.7 4runner, and the 5.29s were better hands down.

I think that’s all I need to hear. 5th gear up hills? Incredible. Any chance you could give me a ball park of what RPMs you hit at different speeds and gears?

I have 5.29s and 295/70/17 (33.23") and its great. Really improves drivability and can get up to speed now without issue. I am turning about 3300 RPMs at 75mph in 5th gear (manual trans). Had 4.88s before this with the same tires and these are much better. 5.29s all the way if you're gonna run 35s

Im sure it’s a big hill. But I think you are overstating it a bit. The steeps roads in the world are only like 37% grade, which is about 20°. And they aren’t highways with speed limits that are very fast. A steep hill on a highway is about 8% (~4.5°).
