I can chime in!. I have a 08 4banger manual and had the original cat take a bump into the secondary cat (yes, dual cats) so I needed to replace both. After bullshitting with the muffler guys for a while they offered me an exhaust rebuild with a new muffler and better tucked (off-road purposes) piping at a VERY low price so I figured what the heck and said to do it. I went with the Magnaflow because I herd the Flowmasters are not as good sounding. It was awesome but eventually the drone on long drives got to be a little much so I went back to have them install a fat resonator and that totally helped. I love to drive the truck even more now. So in all I have two cats, a resonator, large Magnaflow with no tip because its tucked and it sounds way better then any rattle can Civic and BRZ's when I'm next to them. No regrets but the big resonator is key.

What exactly are you trying to accomplish and why? If you just want to make the truck sound cool and powerful then forget the mufflers and consider different mods. Putting a magnaflow or flowmaster on a 4 cylinder just makes it sound like a loud 4 cylinder. It doesn’t really improve performance and it doesn’t make it sound cool and powerful. Nothing wrong with a 4 banger but it ain’t going to sound like a Dodge hemi. It kind of reminds me of when we were kids we’d attach cards to our bicycles so they hit the spokes and we thought it sounded like a Harley motorcycle but no it sounded like cards hitting bicycle spokes.
If making the exhaust sound louder is what you really want to do then go for it. Maybe you should think about things that will make your truck more pleasing and pleasant to drive. Maybe a new stereo system, maybe new paint, maybe interior mods or or new tires or what ever. Or maybe the truck requires some TLC like new shocks or other suspension items, tires, major maintenance etc etc.
Good luck with your first vehicle. Post some pics.

I have a magnaflow on my 09 2.7. One of the first things I did because I can’t keep exhaust quite. I have the muffler end at the front of the bed with a turn down welded to the muffler. Great sound

Welcome and congrats on your upcoming DL. When it comes to making the truck yours, everyone here at TW totally understands and agrees.
I can chime in a the difference between a Magnaflow and a Flowmaster. I put a Magnaflow on my 2000 Dakota 4x4, 8 cylinder and it sounded great and is still on the truck today almost 22 years later. I gave that truck to my son back in 2010 when I got my Tacoma. As for the Flowmaster, my son (same one) got a Ford Ranger 4x4 when he turned 16. One of the first things he (we) did was put on a Flowmaster and before he got rid of that truck (when I gave him the Dakota) we had to replace the muffler because it rusted out. So my advice is, IF you're going to put a muffler on your truck (and we know your are) get the Magnaflow.

As for tires. If the truck is a daily driver and you want good tires get the Michelin Defenders. You'll pay more for them, but you'll get 70,000 miles and they're rated M/S which means they do well in mud and snow.

Enjoy that truck and spend that hard earned money wisely. I know sounds like your dad, but take it from someone who's old enough to be a grandpa.

Do you know what brand resonator, and would you recommend it?

It looks like a Wickedflow unit. I would say do not install a muffler WITHOUT a resonator. Save yourself the money and frustration of having to go back to install one after the fact like I did. Learn from my mistake. :notsure:

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info here.
I never saw any mention as to whether you have 5 or 6 lug wheels. That will make a world of difference as to how you do many of the things you can do to your truck (wheels, suspension etc.).

    Cheers.

If you want to make noise and attract a lot of attention (which you're going to do at that age because that's what 16 year olds do), don't waste money on mufflers. Start learning about car audio and build a custom subwoofer system and then compete in SPL contests.

That'd be a lot better than farting around town in a 4cyl Taco like some boy racer who will just get beat by a Civic or Camry.
