I was tracking down an issue with a leaking drain plug (cross threaded) and noticed that my bell housing is exposed. Is this normal? Doesn't seem right to me.

Note: My transmission was replaced about a year ago by Toyota. I haven't had any issues.

I'm cross posting this in the 4cyl section as well.

    I can't remember
I'm not sure about the automatic transmission but on my 5 speed manual there is a plastic shroud there.

No it isn't normal, it should be covered.

You are just missing the cover.

Oh, the Bell Housing is what covers the flywheel. Your Flywheel is what you are seeing in the open space.

Bump.. Jimmy, do you know if the cover can be installed without pulling the tranny? or does it have to come out for the cover to go back on? I have this exposed bell housing on my 5spd and I am wondering how I can go about covering it back up. Any help would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks in advance,

    Robert

It is plastic and just snaps into place. It is called " Flywheel Housing Dust seal ".

It provides access to the bolts that connect the flywheel to the torque converter.

If it is melting you have other problems that need to be addressed.

Alright ladies and gents, thanks to yalls help, i was able to figure out what i need.

The gunny from camelback toyota tracked the part# down.

For anyone who may also have this issue, here is the part number for the 5spd manual trans. Not sure if theyre specific to auto or manual though.. toyota calls the piece a Flywheel housing dust seal (Like jimmy mentioned up above:bowdown:)
