I want to sooo bad! Just have some ADHD that tells me I need to remove the headliner completely so I could use some sound deadening on the roof. And a nice dedicated waterproof wire pass-thru! I have the rig-nuts and correct rig-nut tool also!

I'm wondering if most shops could adequately handle roof rack install w/ the drilling? Are they likely to know better how to seal it up to prevent water coming in?

pulling the headliner definitely seems like a pain but required.

Asking a shop to do this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen imo. No one is going to care about the quality of the end product like you will. Id try to do it yourself if at all possible.

You don’t need to pull the headliner out. Remove the dome light, overhead console, visors and trim along the sides. Be very careful of the curtain air bags. I shove a few layers of thin aluminum flashing above the bags while drilling just to make me feel better. Seal it up with some silicone and your good. Definitely worth it. I wouldn’t have a shop do it, I doubt you’ll find anyone who’s done enough access cabs to be more proficient than you. Be sure to clean up your metal filings thoroughly or else your going to get rust spots on top of your clear coat and the rack itself. I used a small marine deck seal to rout my electrical into the roof. It feels a bit odd punching holes in your cab, but go for it! If your able to go to Sherpa in Colorado, I’m guessing they would do it for you and they certainly know what they’re doing.

I'm thinking I'm going to be a bit unconventional and run a roof rack from Cap to roof but only tie it in on the cap and let it free float over the cab.

    Cheers,

    Doc

If you do this I would like to see it afterwards...

What height will it need to be off the roof to be able to flex ok and not contact the roof?

Heck even a partial that extended to just over the extra-cab portion would be neat to see.

I just picked this up and added a tonneau cover and wheels so far. I'm really happy with it. 20220509_141041-2.jpg

I haven't quite worked it all out especially the contours of the slabs but the idea is solid. 3 (6 total) attachment points on the cap. I'm going to cut out the honeycomb on the inside sides of the base model Jericho cap and go with some 1"x2" oak strips and then glass them back in solid. Angled runners up top that way I'll end up 90* for the vertical supports which will have to be 3 different sizes to allow for the curve of the cap. I'll probably also stick a couple rubber bumper "feet" over the cab just in case things get flexy. It'll probably be on the order of 110 - 120" long all total with a little overhang or a roller riser on the back so I don't have to hit the cap when laying on a sheet of plywood or similar but not so far that the cap door hits (and I want a ladder to hook to it so I can get on top with the cap door shut and tailgate down). Looking to do 5" x 1/4" slabs so it'll be stout enough to handle 4' (ish) hung over the cab. It might take a minute to get to it, got to install the LCE long tube header first and my son keeps "renting money" and time from me to keep his race car going and my other truck is a 77 Ranchero that I am finishing the motor on. First time I can't haul something it'll probably move up to the front of the "to get done now" list.

    Cheers,

    Doc

Well finally got some free time this morning to drop the LCE Long tube header into my 16' AC SR5. Started at 11:00 was done and road testing by1:30. Only made three minor faux pas'. I ran the nut all the way down on the air box stud for the double nut install on the header so that took a minute to get back off and installed correctly. On the take out I didn't need to disconnect the upper air plenum to get the exhaust manifold out but had to disconnect it to get the header in (3 bolts 2 hoses no big deal). I also left the air tube on the air box side and it wold not let me fit the air box to the block. Unbolted the tube and it slid right in to the existing studs and the tube then bolted right on, just an assembly order thing.

On initial start it ran for about 5 seconds and stalled. Second key twist it ran up and down the RPMS 1000 - 2500 for about 10 seconds and settled back down, idle was a little rough. The battery was disconnected for the whole time so I kind of expected that. No exhaust leaks and no noticeable increase in motor /exhaust noise, very pleased about that. The back pocket dyno says it pulls longer and "fuller" on mild acceleration but the ECU is still relearning so I figure a tank of gas to get it settled down. I also noticed at 2K RPM in 6th (AT) that I'm running about 73MPH as opposed to my normal 70MPH and on the long slow grade where I normally lose 5-6 MPH while just maintaining throttle it only dropped 1-2 MPH. To maintain 50MPH I'm pretty sure I've dropped about 200 RPM to about 1500. The computer hasn't learned enough yet to talk about fuel mileage or overall performance increases but it's off to a good start. So far so good.

    Cheers,

    Doc

I think the Access Cab looks good with a cap. I don't see too many of them.

I bought it with the cap, as I was looking for that for camping with the wife. It has worked excellent. I take it off from time to time for truck hauling duties and think it looks good without it, but then start missing the look and when it goes back on I think she looks complete again. :D

Yes either way a Tacoma looks good! If I ever got a cap I'd hope it wouldn't be too hard to remove. There's times I've used my other truck to transport a lawn tractor. I suppose a snowblower would fit with it on.

I see you have the 2.7L 4 cylinder 4x4, same as mine. I find so far I think that engine does fine. Glad I have it since it's my daily driver and gas is around $4.70/gal here.
