Thanks allmotorrex! Yea I know it's a big reduction in cid and I'm ready to accept it lol. As far as tires, I would run Toyo MT (as large as I can without a lift).

How about on the highway, does it struggle to cruise around 80mph or can it cruise with ease?

I find the 2.7 has plenty of power for normal highway driving. I pretty much stick to the speed limit, which is mostly 75 here in Texas, and there's no strain at all. I've pulled a U-Haul trailer with it a couple times. Last summer I pulled a 4x8 from central Texas to Denver with some furniture for my son and it did real well. Last week i towed a 5x8 loaded with all my son's earthly possessions back to central Texas from Denver (new job) and the truck was working a lot harder. Taller, wider, heavier trailer, and lots of stuff in the bed of the truck. Not something I'd want to do on a regular basis.

Headers and Exhaust seem like the most cost effective way to gain power. If you don't care about cost, supercharger!

I honestly think you may fair better with the v6. The power reduction wouldn't be such a swift kick to the nuts, and if you drive decently the MPG's are almost the same. Just my opinion, I love my 2.7l but I've only owned 4 bangers haha

Looking good! How does the auto feel in the 2.7 does it feel underpowered? I have the manual but never got to try the auto.

A little late chiming in on the MPG thing but the others are right...I get way better MPGs
    1) in the summer
    2) not leadfooting in traffic
    3) when it isn't just a series of short trips
    4) obv when I don't have to use 4WD

    I'm getting about 20 overall

I also just saw a forum post (and now I can't find it) where the owner had replaced the grille insert with the '15 TRD Pro insert (old-school look without the work)...the post was unrelated and was the poster's avatar. I think the truck is green and is a 12+
Now I can't find it and I wanted to ask if that was a snap-in operation which would be well worth, at least for me, the price of admission.

Unrelated: what maker/letters did you use to do the tailgate? I like that treatment and I think it says "Tacoma" way too often on my truck and not nearly enough 'Toyota'. :D

When I used to live outside of town and would drive 25 or so minutes to work, I averaged 21mpg (that was totally stock).

I was getting 18-19 driving 80% in town when I would drive 10-12 minutes to work in the morning and home in the evening in the summer/fall. Lately, its been cold as hell and I drive about 5 minutes to the gym and then 5 minutes to work when I'm done there...then the 10-12 minutes back home after work. All those really short trips, winter gas, and increased idle time to warm the truck up is getting me 13-16mpg. It sucks but I totally get it. Sometimes it freaks me out that something is wrong until I burn a tank on the highway and find I'm still hitting 19-21mpg.

Of course, I'm now lifted w/ 265s and a heavy shell/sleeping platform now so that doesn't help.
