Headers make it louder. Couple it with high flow, straight back exhaust and let 'er rip. You honestly won't see much of a gain at all because Toyota (and other manufacturers) have sized and shaped the pipes for a calculated velocity to maximize torque throughout the entire powerband. However, many aftermarket bolt-ons have a standard size pipe that they mandrel bend, weld, and make to look cool. This can lead to serious inefficiencies. Check out this write-up:

Make sure that if you buy headers, they are from a company that has modeled, flow tested, balanced, and dyno tested their headers FOR YOUR APPLICATION to maximize scavenge and exhaust velocity. Or forget all the nerd jargon and buy shiny pipes that look cool/make the truck sound cool at the cost of torque. That's what I'd do, because... horsepower.

My point was that revving them for no reason will wear them out faster. That is obvious. My real point was that hauling and towing them with max weight and having to rev them to the moon all the time will wear them out faster than many who just use them for DD transportation. I intentionally rev mine up to 3000+ a few times a month because it actually makes it run better for a while. Revving doesn't hurt them at all. I just don't think that revving them to 4000rpm every day is going to get you to the real high mileage club.

The way I drive mine? 13 miles each way on the interstate to and from work. Some around town errands on the weekend and some slow speed dirt roads on the weekends may get me into the 300,000+ club. I hope so. Mine has never towed and never had more than 500lbs in the bed for any length of time and I maintain it religiously.
