I'm in the market for a 2nd gen regular cab but I'm split.

I love driving a manual and I know they are pretty tough but is the auto tranny a bad idea?

Can anyone give me some opinions?

DO NOT GET AUTO, the 5spd is totally the way to go, I have one and would shoot myself if it was auto especially if you gotta go up any big mountains, or plan on going off road

Another recommendation for the 5 speed manual.

DO NOT GET THE 5 SPEED, the auto is totally the way to go, I have one and would shoot myself it it was the 5 speed especially if you gotta go up any big mountains or plan on going off road.
Seriously, 4 speed auto or 5 speed manual, with 3200 pounds of truck & only 159 HP to move it with, it ain't gonna' make a difference. Both are bullet proof & obsolete.

    Getting there...
2.7, manual. 4.0 auto. Drove a manual reg cab before I got mine and It was actually pretty fun. Prefer my auto over my friends manual 4.0 though.

I love manuals, but in a truck and DD forget it. I have both a 2014, 2.7, AT & 2010, 4.0, AT and have zero complaints with either.

Yes a manual would be more "fun" but daily driving one IMO wears the novelty off in a hurry. These trucks drive great wether you have an auto or stick. So buy the nicest truck at the best price and move on.

If I didn't have a 45 mile commute in heavy traffic, I'd say manual.
Hills? I just got back from a trip from LA to Austin, back through Carlsbad, Albuquerque, Painted Desert, through Flag out I-17 into Phoenix and back, including some VERY stiff head-winds that killed 5-6mpg and I never felt the need for more power out of my 2.7 auto.

The five speed is the way to go. Maybe you wont get a batch with the "bad" clutches.

They're not low enough or what do you mean lower gears suck?

I find in my 09 2.7 first gear is reallllly low, especially compared to anything else I've driven, and there's a really long gap between first and second so sometimes I'm stuck lugging it in second or trying to jam it back in first if I'm stuck in traffic. other than that I honestly don't have any complaints about my 5 speed. It shifts smooth and it's just plainly easy as hell to drive.

I had a 2.7L first generation in an auto and it was great. Even towed quite a bit. Do not expect to win any drag races. I towed pretty heavy snowmobile trailers all winter and the transmission was still going at 230k miles when I finally sold it.

I have an '08 4 X 4 2.7L 5-speed and wouldn't trade it for anything. Don't listen to the Californians who complain about daily driving a manual. Their roads are crowded and terrible.

I love my 2.7L manual, but the auto can be a bit of a dog. If the manual is cheaper go for it, if it is more expensive see if you can talk em down.

    Only 159hp?

That's nearly 1hp per cubic inch.
    My '95 Suburban had a 5.7 (350) that only put out 217hp.
1hp per cubic inch used to be a goal of backyard hotrodders.

The 5th generation Toyota pickup (last one before the Tacoma) had a 22RE with 113hp, and the truck was still about 3200lbs... same as the 1st gen Tacoma.

I never even test drove an auto. I specifically wanted a manual. I found a very nice 2010 2.7L, 5sp, 4x4, access cab with under 5000 miles when I bought it in 2010. I've got 55k on it now. Most of the time, it's just me and my Brittany and a couple hiking items in the bed, usually running about 4000 lbs. I love it, and wouldn't change. I am very fortunate that I don't drive in LA traffic, but neither do I spend more than a couple weeks a year in the mountains either. In the last 50k miles I have averaged 21.5 mpg. Did I say I wouldn't want an auto.

My wife drives a minivan with an auto. It just feels right to have an auto when I drive it, wouldn't ever feel right in a truck (to me). I'd say you need to decide which you want, then find the right truck for you.

    Good luck on your search
