I am doing exactly what you stated. I run my tank till the light comes on though, Can you explain to me how 17.37 is over 18 mpg?

He's really saying that your odometer is slightly off.

Your odometer measures by taking the tire rotations against a known tire size to get miles. If you have tires that are 4% bigger, you'll have gone 4% more miles than the odometer will say.

Therefore, you really burned a gallon per 18 miles, but your odometer is only reading as though you went 17.37.

Therefore, if you have oversized tires, calculate your mileage and then multiply it by the difference.

Edit: But you're right. If 235/70R15 is stock for the 5-lug, then yeah, no adjustment is necessary and you really got 17.37.

August 2009, got my 2006 2.7 access cab automatic 2wd SR5 with 41k miles on the odo. Opened a fuelly account around May 2010, average across all fuel-ups is 23.6mpg IIRC. I drive like a sissy most of the time, nice and easy on the throttle and brakes, coasting to red lights from a distance, etc. Only a few mods: aFe pro dry drop-in air filter, magnetic drain plug and rare earth magnets stuck on the oil filter, slightly elevated tire pressures when the roads are dry, plus a friction-reducing additive in the differential gear oil (FYI only these last two are aimed at fuel economy). Has stock 215/75R15 tires, will go up slightly to 235/75R15 in a couple years when the stocks wear out. I know bigger tires will hurt my fuel economy slightly but this is literally my *only* cosmetic indulgence... the only thing my truck needs in the looks dept IMHO is slightly larger tires because the stock tires are like rollerskate wheels in those big open wells, LOL.

Warm weather, and different fuel blend in warm months. Also, at 5,900 you are just getting broken in.

Stock for 5 lug is 215/70r15
235 is oversize, whether it came from the dealer with them or not. Dealers play all kinds of games to make vehicles more attractive... we had one that was putting 20" rims on 2003 Tundras.

I have a access cab 4cyc 4wd, the only thing I,ve done to it is, a cool air in take with a k&N air cleaner, and 3" magna flow exhuast, other then that it stock. I'm getting between 17 and 23 just depending on how I drive and the wind. When I'm asked what kind of milage it gets I say 20. thats most generally real close. So your milage dosen't sound to bad to me, If anything at all you might try plugs and gap them just alittle wider then normal, not much though, that would make the plug run hotter and maybe give you a more complete fuel burn, But ,,,be careful and dont go to much wider.

Hopefully when it's broken in (when's that?) my mileage will go up at least to 22mpg........ hoping. Still love this truck!

I was getting 22MPG combined before I made two simple changes:

    1. Changed my driving style: Specifically, keep my RPMs at 2000 or less (this works out to be about 70MPH), accelerate slowly (especially in traffic to reduce start/stops), and generally maintain a constant speed as you drive on the highway.

This change increased my fuel economy to 24MPG.

    2. I inflated my tires to 40PSI.

This change got me to 24.5-26MPG consistently.

I get 24 with 20-24 psi in my tires....

With that being said, you willing to spend hundreds of dollars for improper tire wear to save ~1mpg? Have you tried to do the chalk line test with 40 psi to ensure you are running the tread flat with the road?

20psi is way underinflated, you will get more uneven wear at that pressure.

I run 44 psi and have for decades and haven't seen the uneven wear that people always warn about.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Well I'm getting about 21.5 mpg and my speedo is off bu 3 mph. It shows 40 I'm going 37 per gps and speed gun. Stock tires and all. No mods. So is my mileage off too. I checked a short distance with gps but no more than a couple miles. maybe 10 miles and it seems accurate.
It just sort of bugs me.

I've consistently increased mine to 23-24. I did the secondary air filter mod and picked up 2-3 mpg.

My speedo is also off by about 3mph at 70.

Odd because it seems to be consistent (meaning it could be corrected by shifting the needle) rather than a percentage error... I mean it's 3mph off at 70 or 35.

I checked my odo against both my GPS and mile markers on a roadtrip and it seemed that I was only off by around 0.2 over the 70 miles that I tracked it, so that's about as accurate as it can get and still allow for tire wear.

Had my best yet mpg: 23.6mpg. It was all highway (70mph) driving. Mileage now is 6950. Must be breking in and summer blend of fuel. Whew, finally cracking 23pg.
