25 to 26 mpg. 2012, 4x4, 2.7, manual transmission, regular cab. About 3000 miles on the truck now. Mostly interstate 60 to 80 mph. A little bit in town.

well, i have been doing more highway in my 11 ac 2.7 4x4 and lemme tell ya, it sucks.

i avg 16mph, occasionally dipping into the 15's. i have billy all around, front set at 1.75 and 265/75-16's. around town i can manage and avg or 20, but highway flat kills this thing. i am regretting not getting the v6 for this one and only reason.

What you are saying doesn't make any sense, and has no logical answer.

    Speed.

I pull between 23 and 27 during "normal" driving, which consists of a morning commute at 65 and an evening commute that averages 30.

On a recent trip to Austin, I got only 22 straight highway.
Pickup trucks are bricks and MPG suffers at speeds above 60.

Hold it at 55 for an entire tank and you'll get 5-8mpg better than holding it at 75.

27.2 MPG on the last tank. ~375 miles on the highway going 55-75 and the rest were in 3rd gear on back roads.

Hi Rich91710, I understand our explanation, but Rodney was stating that he gets 15 on the highway, and 20 in town. Unless he is pulling a house on the highway, he has to have the figures backwards, yet he stated highway flat kills him? He needs to reiterate more clearly so we can appreciate what he is trying to state.

In a 4x4 with oversized tires, his calculated is not going to be accurate... it's going to be lower than actual.
That could account for his numbers being 5mpg lower than typical for the 2.7

But as I said... my trip to Texas, I was getting 3-5mpg LOWER than normal on a pure highway run doing 75-80... same he's seeing.

Pushing a Tacoma to 80mph or more on the highway IS pushing a house through the wind.

    Rich,

My 5 speed, 5 lugger A/C with a load of about 1300 LB of motorcycle, 2 people, and lots of luggage, driven across Kansas into a 25 MPH on average headwind, using cruise, A/C on all the time. It got 21.1 MPG in both directions. The headwind on the return trip was from the dreaded 2 O'Clock direction. Our average speed was 73-77 GPS indicated MPH 95% of the time on I-70. I thought this was quite good considering the wind and payload conditions.

But I too also notice that if you do much above 70 actual the mileage is around 25 MPG. Once I got 27 on interstate trip when I drove 70 indicated, whick is 67 MPH actual on a 375 mile trip.

    Happy motoring to all:burnrubber:

Hi Rich, I'm truly not trying to be argumentative, but here is my train of thought. Even geared to the larger tires, would he still be getting 20 mpg from stoplight to stoplight, while stopping and starting those big tires? 20mpg is standard for city.

On the highway he is getting 15mpg. That would be a 5mpg difference if considering that city/highway are expected to be the same. Most seem to get 25mpg highway like myself. So, he is getting normal mileage in town, and 40% worse on the highway.

I would think there would be more of a sacrifice in town as well.

Hard to know any more without Rodney responding on what speed he's driving.

I get 23mpg combined freeway/city in my 4wd access cab 2.7. Lighter on the gas pedal definitely makes a difference:)

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Interesting the differences. I posted a while ago I do better around town than on the highway. Did about 2 hours straight at about 70 mph and was getting around 18 MPG. Around town, to and from work, groceries and such I get 22 or better. There is clearly a difference seasonally but I did the road trip and around town thing last week so it's not that. I use ac intermittently so I don't think that is really a factor either.
Just seems to be better at lower speeds.

Not a modern truck, but on my 86 with the 22R and 31s I would get 17 in town and 17 on the highway. Highway was pretty much on the floor all the time. Sometimes I whine about the mileage on my V6, then I remember the 86 had less than half the power, no AC, no PS, etc, and it still got less MPG than the 06.

Best MPG is at 55-60 on most vehicles.

    Same with my '94 22RE.
I'd run 17-19 pretty much everywhere.
On a run from Vegas to Phoenix, I held it right at 55 all the way (US highway through AZ) and got 33 on that tank.
Back down to 18 from Phoenix to Tucson at 75.
