The difference in minutes between 70 mph and 74 mph if you are driving 100 miles to work one way is slightly more than 5 min. 50 miles would be 2 1/2 min, 25 miles is 1.25 min, etc. Where you can really save time is doing 50 in a 25. That's saving double the time instead of the "small 5%" your talking about. Or you could get up 5 min. earlier. I'm just being facetious. A lot of people, including me when I was younger, never realize what a small difference it makes to worry about that extra few MPH going to work. I guess this thread is about MPG though, which is also better at a few MPH less. For me anyway. Easy starts and keeping the RPM's around 2000 gives me 22-23 MPG on the back roads and 25-26 MPG Freeway.

I drive 45 miles one way for work.

It's a matter of more than 5 minutes.

5 minutes at "this end" of the commute can mean missing a traffic "window" that can make a difference of 20 minutes at the other end.
Leaving work an hour early gets me home 90 minutes earlier.

Also, driving at 70 vs 65 can be the difference in becoming a hood ornament on a minivan and moving along comfortably with the flow of traffic.

I don't worry about the time involved to get to work. I get there when I get there. I was only discussing speedometer accuracy. I drive no more than 5MPH over the limit on the freeway, and I do not speed in town. At 33, I don't think I fit the young, wreckless driver mold. I really never did, actually.:)

Oh, I think I already posted in this thread, but the 09 2.7 5speed is pulling around 18MPG in mixed driving. It's probably got 800 pounds in it, including me, day in and day out. While I am not a speeder, I am a jackrabbit starter. I could probably squeeze a bit more out of her if I tried.

Leaving an hour early avoids traffic, a 5 mph difference doesn't, I fail to understand your point?

I often drive 5mph slower than the posted speed and haven't become a hood ornament yet?

It can... Traffic flow changes so quickly leading into "rush hour" that any delay can chain-react to many times the original.

Leave an hour early? No thanks. I already leave home at 5am to start work at 6 and leave work at 3:30 to get home by 5 if I'm lucky, and occasionally 5:30.
    You live in Colorado.
    I commute through Los Angeles.

Driving less than 10 over the limit makes you a hood ornament, and if not, you are constantly the target of road rage... people cutting you off after zipping around you with horns blaring, and when you need to make a lane change, good luck... it ain't gonna happen.

leaving 10 minutes earlier in the morning for me means missing rush hour and leaving work at the time I do misses rush hour.

both saving 20-25 minutes at a minimum

btw isn't this a MPG thread?

Ya... Rather than fighting about justifying speeds, I should have just said "Save the sermon"... and he wasn't even responding to someone breaking the limit!

You brought up leaving an hour early, I wasn't suggesting it.

So far I've added an Advance folding bed cover and since removed it. Gave it to my son in Maine, he has an 05 2wd. GT perfect fit seat covers. Weathertech floor mats and window vent visors. Waag center brush/grill guard. Hose clamp tailgate mod. Turned off the seat belt chime. Added Ultra-Gauge. Trailer hitch. Softopper. Replaced sun visors with slide out style. Toyota bed extender. Had Firestone Destinations and now Michelin LTX AT2 in stock size. More mods to come; Fog lights, locking storage in bed, intermittent wipers. Now looking for Radio/HU upgrade. and maybe a lift way down the road.
Almost 23 MPG at last fuel up, yesterday. Went 406 miles on the tank. Light came on around 400 while I was on the way to work with the fuel stop on the way. 3.519 per gallon is the cheapest around here.

Man I would love to get 20 something. I have a 2010 access cab 4x4 stock and get 18mpg. If I use shell gas I only get 16mpg so I stick with chevron and get 18. 99% of my driving is city and when I do highway it is 500 miles straight. Highway I usually keep it at 80 and see 16.5 to 19 flat depending on wind. The nice thing is that I don't see any decrease with a fully loaded truck (2 motorcycles, back seat packed with clothes etc., an extra 250# person and a 55# dog)

I have regretted getting the 2.7 because I don't get the MPG I was expecting and it doesn't have the power to keep up with traffic on hills. If I got the 21 22 I expected I wouldn't mind the lack of power. My 98 4 runner with a v6 had way more power and got 18mpg no matter what you did.

I get the 22mpg you dream about.....at 70 MPH. Slow down and profit when you realize you don't save much time going 80. You would never see 17mpg with the v6 doing 80 either. Your numbers are great for turning almost 3000 rpm on the highway. You should be happy...

For the distance that I'm going that 10 MPH makes a 54 min difference. When I do that drive the time savings is worth the MPG to me, also most people are doing around 90 on that highway so 70 feels too slow for the conditions. I put that information because I figured someone would ask if I didn't.

My dad who drives 70 max usually sees 19 with a best of 19.5. Maybe he has had a head wind as he has only driven it 3 times.

My main frustration is that my 4 runner got 18 and I drove it the same way.

bump up your tire pressure, you'd be surprised what 10psi does for MPG

when I first got my truck I was averaging 19.5 combined. I removed the secondary filter and added a k&n which put me where I'm at now, 20.5-21.5 combined
